Bobcat Mating Season-NOW

I got a call from a local horseman saying he had bobcats squalling so much around his place, that it was unnerving his horses. Yeah! right.

I wentover there this evening/tonight. BINGO he was right. I have heard them squall before, but not like this. He has a cutover right next to his horse barns. I went down in the cutover near a swamp and called a little between 4:45 and 5:30 this evening with no results. As I was walking back to the house they started squalling and answering each other as they moved about inside the cutover. I got to the house and the owner and his wife were standing outside listen to them. We stood there together and listened for another 15-20 minutes in the total darkness. It was neat to hear them that way. One would squall then another would answer from the other end of the cutover.

How would you play out this hand if it were dealt to you? Give me your opinions of how to call it.

When they have sex on their minds, there ain't much a prey sound will do for them.

Hey Sonny you might try house cat in distress I read some where that they were attractive to house cat sounds. I don't know if they come to eat or mate. I went to Bleakhill Farm tonight and 1st call got a red to come in to the woodpecker on the foxpro. Next stand nothing and the 3rd stand we called next to the cut over across from the driveway going into Bleakhill and nothing. Got back to the truck and went to turn around and there is a gray in a trap. made 1 more stand in the bottom and nothing got in the truck and drove across the field and there is another gray in a trap. I guess there is not much reason to go there anymore this year.

I have never heard Bobcat make sounds unless they where hurt. I am sure you are right about what is going on but I have never had a situation like that.
I would go one of two ways either be aggessive and start out by moving as close as I dared go without thinking I would be detected and then try simple lip squeaks. You would be surprized at how some cats respond to this simple sound.
Then again you could just locate a likely spot for an ambush and try pleading with them at a low volume on a good mouth call, nothing to excited or loud just remember curiosity often kills the cat.

The only time I ever hear them make any vocal sounds is during the month of January. This year is even more pronounced than last year. Breeding season, never heard it any other time of year either.

Hi Sonny, you are right, as I believe I heard courting cats carrying on in a remote stand before. They could have been feral cat sounds, but there were alot of bobcat prints in the snow going into my stand. I tried to call them but didn't get a response. This was late afternoon.

I think they will be done mating quick, and you should be able to get one with standard tactics. I have called plenty of cats in January and Feb.

Say guys,
I have heard this mating sound several times but only 2 times have I been able to call them in. I have had real good luck with a bird sound at first for about 15 mins. then go to a cat in distress or cat in heat and they usually show up soon after that sounds cries for about 5 mins. Most of the time with this procedure I can call a cat in in about 30 mins. or less. If a fox or a dog don't beat them to the punch. I took my girlfriend last year for her 1st sighting of a live cat. Same sounds and same time (25 mins.) I had to pass 3 greys but the tom cat showed up and came to 30 yds. before a .223 40gr. Vmax broke the night. It works and it works well but it takes usually 30 mins. or more if you see one coming in.
On the 40gr. Vmax in my 223 at 3300 fps. It has never made a splash hole on a dog and hardly ever exits anything including fox. That is my hide load of choice and it does work.
