Bobcats in NJ

AviD hey I just switch off the other thread. I grew up in the north part of the state , up in sussex county. I have never seen a bobcat either but my Dad had one under his bow stand.That was 30 years ago though but ther was occassional sightings up in the delaware national recreation area in the last few years. I live here in the south part of the state now and its a diffrent world down here. We have porcupines up there too,which a lot of people didn't realze we have. It think the oddest thing ever sighted in this state was a bull moose wondered through the culvers lake area back in the early 90s id woindered down all the way from Mass. I just heard this fall that some bobcats were released in south jersey but Im not sure where.
 
No the have always been down here. about 10 years ago I was involved in a reserch on them. but we don't see them. To thick! once in a while I hear one. coon hunters put them up trees every year. so them and the yotes was not released. but there are alot more up by NY line in north west part of the state
 
Yeah like I said, the NJ regs state no bobcat season, no bobcats are to be killed/hunted...so I'd imagine they know they are here.
 
Hey Redneck I didnt know about them being down here in the south part of the state. I do know that 12 years ago they move more yotes down here.It is my understanding that even the increase of bear sightings is because of transporting some down to the south part of the state. The state is keeping things quiet on what they are doing. The reason is that there was a bear relocated out in one of the western states [I beleive it was Arizona] that after being a nuisance was relocated and when they released it to another location it killed someones kid . There was some legal stuff going on and the parents of the child were holding the state liable for wrongful death. I almost beleive that is why the states in the east keep saying that all the cougar sightings are released exotic pets . I know a number of the sightings were actually by law inforcement officials.I know the sighting in Vernon was by a police officer who said that he had doubted some reports in his area until he had female with cubs in his driveway.
 
I own and operate a wildlife control business here in the state and have been in business for 25 years. I get calls all the time for coyote bear bobcat and big cats, I also was called in a few years ago to see if we could locate a pair of cats that was running around one of the towns. Most calls are nothing>

you would not believe the stuff I hear about the state releasing crittes.

Bears I know are in the lower part of the state most above RT1 that Road is a wildlife control method in it's self LOL
bears was released many years ago but that was some time ago. Bob cats have been here since I was a boy I know, That is the first time I heard one behind my place that was 35 + years ago. I also was one of the trappers involved in the study to try to get a bob cat count here. They are getting a few more in numbers but not anything that you can see. 8 years ago I along with 2 other trappers in the southern part was also given permits to gather info on snareing yotes ( we only Had the 8 inch loop at that time.
If the state relocated them as if you hear then they did it many years ago but I doubt thay would have relocated them in the heart of capemay city. the panthers well I have seen some big tracks in the snow but to say they are panthers I can't say. need some of those western boys for that. Rumors fly all over plain facts are as these critters adapt to people and our habitat they are growing in numbers. one of the biggest fears we have is some stupid person is going to get hurt bad or some kid killed by a bear so I do not think the state wants to put bears some where they are not to cause more problems in a part of the state that they are not. We can't even keep a hunting season for them in the north where they are like ticks. so I do not think they want the problems down here. maybe wrong

Hey Redneck I agree with you on the rumor stuff it is amazing how fast it spreads. The state did release the yotes but yes it was it was in the early 90s . My hunting partner is a supervisor with the Nj state police so I know the tracks in chatsworth 6 years ago were IDed as panther tracks by an expert the state brought in. It was funny I talked with a rep. for the nj federation of sportsman and he called a pair of bobcats in this past in byram township .Like I said in the original post the bobcat my father saw was about thirty years ago. There is no doubt that once the established the yotes population have really been growing state wide . I will ask Dave Chanda about if they added more bobcats down here I am in the same hunting club and grew up with him and his brothers.
 
While we are talking fur I will be giving a trapping course on the 10th and 11th down in Salem if you know anyone that needs the state snaring cert have them sign up on the div web site for the trapper traing course.
 
Hey Redneck once they have the certificate they can use conibears too .I will see if anyone I know is looking to get the test.
 
That is correct it is the trapping and snare cert we need the cert to set snares the trapping course is the state trapping course for trapper ed
