I shot one this year. It came in giving me a frontal shot. Just as it ducked under a barbwire fence I let him have it with the shotgun at 25yds. I was suprised to see no tail. I tried skinning him but when he ducked under the fence I grazed him in about 3 different places and the holes looked like 4-5" knife wounds! I figured with no tail and all the sewing he was wasted.
Neat story. Bobtails---are they freaks of nature or are the tails getting bit off in fights, or froze off in winter? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
I have seen young mother dogs chew the cords too short, chew the tails a down to a nub and even castrate young males while cleaning them up. I assume that young female coyotes may do the same thing.
there is a disease called ring tail that could cause it as well, but I'm not sure if coyotes get it or not.
I shot one about 2 years ago with a bobtail. It was a 30 lb. female. I shot her at 25 yards with my shotgun. That is the first and the last one i've seen. I think it's a neat little defect that just adds to the memory. Mine was in August and was wet from dew so it aint real purty. Congrats on the kill!

Wow, thanks for all the replies. I would have never guessed, there were so many bobtailed coyotes out there. Well, I like to shoot the weird stuff the most. Very cool pictures, everyone! ~Excellent~
