Bobwhites

I have a covey that hangs out right behind my house. I love taking a cup of coffee out to the patio in the early morning and listening to them. Loss of habitat and an increase in nest raiders have taken a toll on them in my area.

Gotta love Bobwhites. Wondering if anyone else has had this experience. A number of years ago I hunted a fair sized ranch in Starr county. The northern half of the ranch was a bit more arid than the south and mostly populated by blue quail. The southern end, mostly Bobwhites.
Had a blind in southern end of north pasture and noticed a covey of blues hanging out in the area, but strangely enough they had one bobwhite with them on several occasions. That was strange enough, but later saw a covey of Bobwhites with a single blue in the bunch; also on more than one occasion.
Have never seen the two mix anywhere else.

As I sit here this morning I can hear the quail calling to each other along with the doves and song birds. The largest flock has been around 30, I think this year it's around a dozen, pretty soon I should see the little one running around. I planted a row of mesquite and cactus outside the yard as a refuge for them and a supply of mesquite beans for food. Inside the yard I have a row of oleander and Texas sage alongside the archery range for them also, one tried to nest in it but I think the roadrunner ruined the nest.

The ones around here are Gambles.
