Bolt open about an inch is it really safe ?

I have seen a Remington rifle drop the firing pin when the safety was disengaged but it was after the trigger had been messed with. NOT GOOD!!

If a person is going to have a round in the camber then keep the bolt raised. Used this method for over 40 years. I won't carry a shouldered rifle with one in the tube. My personal preference.

One of our duty Rem 700 LTR rifles did that... I had a video of it. We switched all our rifles to Timney triggers. There are re-calls even on the X-Mark Pro trigger in addition to the older Walker style.

Others have answered your original question. Here is another angle to look at it from. For some of us it is about more than could it go bang, it is simply illegal. Here is the wording of a regulation in Colorado “It is illegal to have a loaded (in the chamber) rifle or shotgun in or on any motor vehicle. Muzzleloading rifles are considered unloaded if the percussion cap or shotshell primer is removed, or if the powder is removed from flashpan. It is illegal for anyone to have a loaded electronic-ignition muzzleloader in or on a motor vehicle unless the chamber is unloaded or the battery is disconnected and removed from its compartment.”

I wouldnt want to argue semantics with a warden or trooper on wether an open bolt with a round “partially” loaded in the chamber is gtg or not. We also obviously then can’t discharge a firearm from a vehicle legally either so that takes care of that. I’m sure other states see it differently.

I had a Remington 700 fire when releasing the safety, but like pyscodog the trigger has been worked and adjusted on that rife. I had been using that rifle for probably 20 years and never a problem. I readjusted the trigger and have tried to make it do it again and it has worked flawlessly sense then. Luckily I always practiced good muzzle control, but that really drove that home for me and I am extra vigilant now. A safety is a mechanical device and they can fail.

I always carry rifles and shotguns loaded with safety on hunting rabbits and upland. I do unload if the going gets too rough chasing chukar etc. Always muzzle control and finger out of the guard. In the truck I empty the chamber on the shotgun which has auto mag cutoff. Rifle I fully unload and keep the magazine in my pocket. I do not like to leave the action open as it ends up allowing debris to get in there. I keep it open at the range, or when at the truck getting ready etc. I don't just leave the action open bucking around in the truck or walking to and from stands.

I know several people who hunt with the gun loaded and no safety cuz they never learned to release the safety during the gun mount. I always make them walk in front of me. Pretty stupid if you ask me. When you fall your first reaction is to clench your hand on th egun and maybe on the trigger. I have only missed a target maybe 1 time cuz of the safety and that was when i was just starting to hunt.

I would never hunt with an idiot like that.
