My father and I are looking at booking a hog hunt for next spring/summer. We are looking at something on the Western 1/2 of the State. We want to do a 3 day hunt and have unlimited hogs. We have found some places for 175 a day, but do not want to spend A whole lot more then that. Any suggestions? Outfitters you have used? We will be driving down so we need to hunt during the week, not just weekend. Thanks a bunch

That's probably not too bad for unlimited hogs. What's included with that price? If it includes a place to stay you're in the right ball park. Did you talk with others who have hunted there? What kind of shot opportunities can the place offer? Saying "unlimited hogs" and then producing more than a few may the tough part. One thing I like to have while hog hunting is a place to tend to the meat (Texans usually are well set up for this) and a walk-in cooler in which to hang your hogs. This is especially important later in the spring/summer and if you're staying for several days. I hate having to leave sectioned critters in a stew of ice water and their own blood for days on end. The guy I hunt with has a nice little cooler for our use. We only put the meat on ice for the trip home. I'd recommend you schedule your trip for a full moon period. Hogs are notorious for going nocturnal when pressured, especially in warmer weather. It's legal to hunt hogs at night in TX, and a full moon allows you to do so without the aid of artificial light. I love poppin' piggies by moonlight. It's so romantic /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Good luck, you'll love hog hunting. I sneak down there twice a year now.

A walk in cooler is definately nice to have but I have always been told (expectually when it comes to hogs) to let the meat bleed out in a cooler for a few days. Just add new ice every day and dump out the old ice and bloody water. But anyway your in for a real treat at the dinner table, in my opinion hog backstrap is twice as good as venison. I cant really give you any suggestions on where to go hunting for $175.00/day most of the places that I know are more than that. There has to be a thousand different ranches that offer hog hunting, just do a little searching on the web. Also check out www.ttha.com

The place we are looking at has full accomidations. The price includes meals and skinning and guting. They have a walkin for use. We are not looking for hogzilla, just the ability to shoot some hogs. We did a similar hunt 2 years ago, for $400/person for 2 days/2nights. No food included. Our goal is simple, decent accomidations (Shower and Bed) and hogs. We will hang the hogs at the ranch. We have made a huge cooler that uses the 2 inche foam insulation which is used on the exterior for houses. We use the same thing for our early elk hunts, antelope hunts and mule deer hunts. The cooler rocks. We freeze big bottles of water and have ice in the cooler for 6-8 days straight. Also by having the ice frozen in bottles the only water involed is some condensation. I was hoping that you might have some favorite outfitters, freinds or others that you might be able to recomend. I hate paying too much for a hog hunt as they are seen pest most places. Kinda feels like paying to shoot P-Dogs or yotes. I figure that I should be paying more less for the accomidation and guide, not the animal.

Thanks Elks

elks --- sure would appreciate if you would keep us posted as to how you are doing. As another CO guy looking to hunt hogs in TX, I am very apprehensive as to how to go about it without getting scre%$#.

Personally, I figure a person ought to be able to locate folks that will let ya hunt hogs without a fee. A lot of people want help getting rid of the vermin in the first place. I realize that may never happen in Texas as they generally seem pretty attached to the trespass fee for a living, but it is not uncommon to hear about land owners in other states that look at it as the hunter is doing them a favor, and I feel that is correct.

If I was looking at hunting big game or Exotic's, I would fully expect to pay a fee for the honor but when it comes to PD's or hogs, I figure it's one person helping the other.

Perhaps tcman, but these guys are looking for a place to stay with food, a guide, etc. You can't expect that to be handed out, even if you are helping get rid of problem animals. You have to expect to pay your own way. You've also got to realize that many ranchers expect a small fee to compensate them for unforeseen factors, like road damage, fence repair, shot-out lights, etc. Like it or not, some of our hunting brethren aren't exactly perfect, and things happen. If a landowner doesn't know you from Adam, you can't realistically expect him to welcome you with open arms.

I agree that if ya want bells and whistles, ya most like expect to pay. That's no different than any guided full service big game hunt.

elks, there's some hog hunting in the panhandle, which would save you some gas money. Been on two hunts in the pandhandle. Both were ok......But! The first time around was full accomadations, etc. I won't do that again. Better to go the bunkhouse route and do your own food, etc., which is what we did the second time. I'm ready to go back again but will probably try another outfit just for variety and cant really suggest anything except to do a google on texas hog hunting.

I heard that there is a feral hog problem along the Arkansas river valley in SE CO! Anybody heard anything about that?

Also there's a guy who has hog hunts along the river between CO spgs and Pueblo.

Rumors are that there is a hog problem in the valley, however I have not seen any confirmation on this. There are a couple different places in CO that have hog hunts, however I have hunted CO all my life, want to get down where thing bite and stab.

Elks, I am heading down to Tx in two weeks. We load up and take our dogs a couple times a year. We hunt ranches that we were invited to. Get down there and make some friends. It may take a little while, but you'll find ranchers that will welcome hog killin'. Now, when deer season is in, it is a different story. We got invited to hunt neighboring ranches in the off season after people got to know us. They told us they would only charge us for the ones that get away /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif.
