Hi, i have a Tipton coated rod for my .223 and a jag for cleaning with patches.
It goes down nice and tight, cleans really well.
I got told i would not need a bore guied, as my equipment does not scracth the bore or throat when going in.
Im carefull whilst cleaning.
Do i need one?
Thanks.

Only if you want to actually clean your gun. If you just want to look at the rod no guide is nessassary. In addition to protecting the bore from scratches a bore guide will help stop damage from the rod from flexing. It will also protect your rod from having the coating scratched. I see them as a very small investment when considered against the cost of the rifle or a quality cleaning rod.

In addition to the reasons Chuck McCann mentioned, a good bore guide will keep solvent and oil out of the chamber and magazine area of your rifle as well. Don't even think about running that cleaning rod into your barrel without a good quality bore guide. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Hi, I would get a bore guide if I were you. The rod was money well spent, and so will the bore guide. I bought one not even knowing what it was, I was told by the salesman. Boy, I love it now!

More reasons to have one than not. The MTM plastic ones are dirt cheap besides.

I use a Stoney Point, it's adjustable for most types of actions and many varmint calibers.

You definitely need one but not an MTM one. They are no better than none at all. A good machined delrin guide with o-rings is the minimum that will take care of your barrel and bedding.

Thanks guys, you have been very helpfull.
I have a CZ 527 .223, will the stoney creek fit it.
If it neds ajusting, how is it done?
I got a Pro-Shot guied but the dam thing did not fit. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I have made numerous guides out of fireformed brass for a particular gun and a short arrow shaft. Just cut off the end of the case, glue in the shaft, and its ready to go. They work great.

Wanna re-think that in the light of day /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I think it would definitely keep solvents and debris out of the action and magazine, don't you?

Point understood, but lets not get "snobbish" on the matter.

That is a great friggin idea! I bet you could sell a boatload of those at gun shows!

Maybe add some sort of adjustable collet to hold it in place and you'd have a winner there.

For your CZ 527 get one that fits a Sako mini mauser action. And yes, Jack is right, get the machined delrin one with the O-ring. Less than 20 bucks from a number of suppliers and worth every penny!

When you use a fireformed case, I often do not need a collet to hold it in at all..... The cases fit pretty tight. I have used an unfired case and they do not seal things up as well.

The MTM guides are better than nothing but they are not in the same class as the delrin guides. The MTM guides do not fit the action very well, the hole for the cleaning rod is oversize and they have no o-rings.
