im looking to buy a bore sighter for my rifles, and i cant decide between getting the ones that fit any rifle and go into the end of the barrel, or the ones that look like a shell casing that go in the chamber of the rifle.
what do ya'll usually use? which style do you prefer? and lastly, which brand and model would you recomend

It depends on a couple things. How high are your scopes going to be over the centerline of you bore and what type of flash suppressor do you have?

I like the optical type that goes in the bore for most of my stuff but with an AR that has an Izzy suppressor on it you can't use one, I had to purchase a laser type that goes in the chamber. The advantage of the laser chamber type is you can bore sight anything but then the big if, that is if you have the arbor to fit the chamber. The type that goes in the muzzle is pretty universal mine came with arbors for everything from .20 - .500 caliber so I didn't need to buy any separate adapters. Both styles work well most of the time but the chamber style will work all the time given you have the correct adapter case. My laser one is an Aimshot and my muzzle type is a Bushnell.

Well as of now all the rifles I would be bore sighting are the same caliber. 223 rem. I just got a sale magizene from the "sportsmens guide" and they have the ones that go in the chamber for 29.99, and I'm tired of paying gander mountain 25 bucks to bore sight one gun. I believe the brand name is fire stream, I'm not positive though. Ill have to re check the ad. Ill look up the aimshot in the mean time

Ive been using the calometer style for my bolt guns,it has the 10x10 grid inside...Now im going to try a bushnell lazer style for my muzzle loader and my ar because the scope is much higher.

i use the laser works great, mine gets me really close on target at 25 yards then i shoot out to 100 from there. being able to use it on multiple calibers is great.

My bro(being the tight wad he is) bought a cabelas branded set from the bargin cave. It's the kind with the .223 lazer unit and the adapters that look like empty casings. Welllll I know why they're in the bargin cave. IMHO not very effective at all, If'n you have a good quality scope I'd just set a big chunk of cardboard @25yds w/ a 1/2"grid target and adjust the scope.

remenber 1/4 moa scope requires 4 clicks at 25 yards to move point of impact 1/4 inch or 16 clicks per inch

if it is a bolt gun just pull the bolt and bore sight through the bore ......$25.00 for bore sighting holy crap! all that just to get you on paper at 25 yards I just us e a large piece of paper (old construction blue prints work great)
and I use the two shot method ....fire at center and with gun mounted solidly return sight to bull and without moving gun adjust sight to the bullet hole......you have now sighted your firearm in and as long as you can see your first round hit you can sight in with 2 rounds one being a first and sight adjusting round and the other being a proof round
my two cents!
