Bottles of powder for wind testing.

I was just about to say that I always just kick the ground. I sure do hate it though when a coyote comes up from behind me when I am sittin on the side of a hill. Freaks me out every single time!

There isn't any dirt where I hunt! Just Grass and rocks.

My feet are all I have, and they hurt most of the time.

Unscented talc or chalk dust will do me fine.

Thanks for all the replys.

A fairly long piece of "flagging tape" attached to your truck antenna is often helpful in determining if the wind is right for what you want to do before you get out of the vehicle. Kicking up sand to determine wind direction is usually pretty effective in the desert, but I still prefer using a small "Bic" lighter. If you can't tell with a lighter, the wind either isn't blowing hard enough to matter or is blowing too hard. I don't believe in spending money on more unnecessary stuff to carry and at least a lighter is useful for other things (sometimes indispensible). The bottles of powder are useful when deer hunting from tree stands, because the powder is better at showing the suble air currents between you and the ground. - John

You can also use pillow stuffing from the fabric store (a couple bucks for a big bag). Throw a handfull into your pocket, and when you want to test the wind, just pull off a tiny tuft and let it float away.

Mark

I keep about that much white nylon sewing thread tied about an inch from the end of my gun barrel.

Yeah, like I needed an excuse..

Hi Pack Wolf, here is what I use and been doing so for 17 years or so: Take a common nose drops plastic spray bottle that is nearly empty anyway, and spray out the rest. grip the threaded portion tightly with your thumb and index finger, and sort of unscrew and wiggle it slightly while exerting a light but firm prying out pressure, and it will come out. Turn it upside down and prop against the counter top splashguard or similar place and wait for it to dry completely. You can also dry it out nearly completely with cotton swabs. Then fill it back up about halfway with common corn starch, unscented baby powder, unscented resin, or anything light and fluffy like that, and you got yourself a super duper wind checker that was virtually free.

Good hunting at ya!

+1 i use this method also, but i use baking soda!

I use baking powder in a nasal plastic bottle...however another method I use as a back up is cotton balls. Put about 5 cotton balls in a plastic film case. When you want to test wind just use forefinger and thumb and pull just a few small threads of the cotton off and let it go above your head. It will tell you which way the wind is going and carry it off for about 20 to 30 ft in that direction. Actually I like it better than the powder method. Just my two methods...

I've tried using various powders listed above, they work ok, but are heavy and clumpy. Google "Smoke-in-a-bottle". I think Crooked Horn Outfitters (bino-buddy) makes it. You just flip the cap open and the finest "smoke" rises up and is affected by the slightest air currents. You really don't even need to squeeze it.

that's 90% of the time here in Western Washington.
