So my brother calls me today and said he has a gun deal for me. I'm a sucker for buying used guns, so he says his friends dad is selling a bunch of stuff because he's been out of work for to long. So my bro brings over a cased 1915 GEW Mauser 98, at first I'm not intrested then the cool factor hit me. This thing has totally been sporterized new blueing, drilled and tapped, modern bolt handle , 1 lb trigger, custom checkered walnut stock with tip and cap, 26" barrel chambered in 257 Roberts. Needless to say that $300 in my wallet had to go.
So the rifle is mine and I dont know much about the WW1 era rifles. What type of loads will this thing handle? I've got diff powders on hand just not sure about reloading for this old relic.

I have an argentine mauser in 243 and I've read they can handle good pressures. Mine has a very light trigger too. You can buy magazines for it for 35 bucks. I don't think the stripper clips work for 257.

The only problems I've heard about sporterized mausers is the force required to unscrew the old barrel can torque the steel and make your new barrel very inaccurate if it wasn't done right.

Good news is you can buy a new barrel in almost any midsized caliber you want for under 100 bucks, just make sure you unscrew the old one carefully or get a good gunsmith.

I have re-done a few GEW 98 Mausers in 30-06 and most were very well built. Check the headspace to be sure of what you have there. It sounds like you got a good deal. This is a sporterized 98 I did recently.

Welcome aboard, I've had mine for about 25 years now, and it's very dependable, strong and accurate. I think SODOKJIM's stock is nicer than mine.

Mine also was in 257 Roberts, but years ago when I hunted Eastern Oregon, I though I needed more punch for the muleys, so I had it bored out to 25-06 by Huntingtons in Oroville.

Beautiful beautiful rifle!!! Beautiful wood work, I like that!

I need to get the bolt jewelled that would really top it off. I've been looking through the new load manuels I have and it looks like the 257 Roberts with the 26" barrel will be right up next to the 25-06 velocity's.
