Boyd's At-One stocks

I got one last year, thinking it was going to be going to be the greatest thing ever. I suffer from short LOP syndrome....so this seemed to to fit the bill. I was less excited after it arrived. The grip and forend feel like you're holding a 2x4. It has sharp edges, which feels terrible. The adjustable length and cheek rest are nice and work pretty well. I got rid of it pretty shortly after I received it.

The AT-ONE CZ uses on their new 457 rimfire is much nicer. It didn't have the sharp edges. Hopefully Boyd's will change them all to be like that.

Ha, this is funny, I was just talking to my dad this morning about the At-One he has on his Howa 1500 based 6.5-06AI.

There are some things about Boyd's At-One that we, both, really like, and there are a couple things we kind of hate.

I'll start with the good. Considering their price point, you get a lot of stock for the money and they're a really solid piece. They're fairly well inlet and required very little sanding. They adj. cheek piece and adj. LOP are rock solid as well. Because it's wood, I'd still recommend having pillars installed and the action fully bed though.

Now the not so good. IMO, Boyd's went a little overboard with trying to incorporate to much adjustability on them. The interchangeable plastic forend and the plastic interchangeable grip pieces, again IMO, would have been much better if they were wood. The forend isn't all that big of a deal, although I don't think the plastic looks that great and wood would have looked and felt better, but it's that plastic grip that feels really odd. To me, it feels really square in your hand and just isn't very comfortable. I've been thinking about taking those pieces off and trying to somehow contour them so they don't feel so square, but plastic can be hard to work with because it melts so darn easy.

I see Boyd's has a new thumbhole version of the At-One and, per the pictures, appears to be ambidextrous. I'm no particular fan of how they look, but I'd bet they feel a lot better in the hands and would be much more comfortable than the original AT-One. My only concern with that new thumbhole version would be how strong/durable it would be because it looks to be fairly thin at certain points.

I think if someone was a wood working hobbyist or knew someone that was, they could pretty easily replace those plastic scales with some type of wood and make one of these At-One stocks not only look better but feel much better too.

I'm actually looking at the thumbhole version. My rifle isn't a heavy barrel but its not a sporter either. They, Boyd's, don't offer the thumbhole for a HB so I may have to open the barrel channel up.

That thumbhole version looks like it would be much more comfortable in the grip area.

Considering the price point of these stocks, it would be easy to assume the adj. LOP and adj. cheek piece would maybe be cheesy or flimsy, but they're both rock solid and much higher quality that I ever expected.

I replaced the factory walnut stock my CZ 527 Varmint 204 came with for a Boyd's. The Boyd's model I went with only came inlet for the CZ 527 American so I had to open up the barrel channel to fit my Varmint model. I have a 1in wood dowel that's about 24 inches long and with a piece of sand paper wrapped around it, it made for pretty short work opening the barrel channel.

The Boyd's stock I put on my 204 was their rimfire hunter model and it was done in their Coyote Laminate.

My dad has one of their Pro Varmint models on his Ruger 77/17 HMR and the At-One on his 6.5-06AI, both of those are in their Coyote Laminate as well.

I've used Boyd's stocks on several rifles in the past. Had the Camo laminate and the Sky, and a few in the Pepper. If you like blue, the Sky is really a pretty stock. The Pepper laminate is on my Remington 700 ML right now and looks really nice. Seems they all look better than the plastic factory stuff that comes on them.

Got that right! When I buy a rifle with a tupperware stock, I'm
imagining what it will look like with what model, color combo
of Boyds will be best for it. Most have gotten a bedded,
pillared laminate stock prior to shooting them. No At One's
here, though. Favorite is the Pro Varmint and fits me perfectly.
It can be had with comb adjustment.

Same for me as well.

I have the standard non-adj. painted black Pro Varmint on my Sav. Bmag 17WSM and my dad has a Pro Varmint w/adj. cheek piece in Coyote Laminate on his Ruger 77/17 HMR. I wouldn't compare the quality of the two, but they feel just like my McMillan A5's, but cost considerably less.

For a pretty decent stock, without spending a lot of money, I think they're hard to beat.

Have one and for the price I paid it is just fine. It is a little like a 2x4 and I did think about sanding it to clean it up. For the price I paid it work nicely on my Howa. Rudy

I got the At-One thumbhole but got it for my Howa instead of the Browning. I think I'm going to like it just fine. Not clunky feeling to me at all. I did have to trim some proud wood around the action and open the barrel channel just a bit for the heavy barrel but it was just less than an hours worth of work. I do like the adjustable LOP and cheek riser. I tried to order the varmint fore-end but they said I couldn't change my order. I didn't want to change, just add to but they wouldn't do it. The standard fore-end is kinda narrow for me anyway.

I have the original at-one on my savage axis it’s about the on stock that I could get that would work for me for what I wanted. I got the different grip the steeper target grip and it is fairly comfortable for me. Now the adjustable parts work good they do have a little bit of slop in them I don’t know if they have improved that now or not I have had my stock for two years now. I have the action trued with a different barrel and have shot some of the best groups I have ever shot. I have shot it out to 500 yards with good groups and no issues so I don’t know if the slop in the adjustable lop and check riser matters it’s not a ton but enough to notice I don’t notice it when shooting more so when I played with it to see how solid it was. The inlet for the action fit perfect the barrel inlet they didn’t offer for my configuration for a heavier barrel but with some sand paper and dowel and the dremel I was easily able to make it fit. The down part I didn’t like was they won’t make anything custom for you. Because my axis has the standard recoil lug they machined the action back when they trued it so I could use a regular lug, they wouldn’t leave the standard recoil lug out. That thing was a pain in the *** to get out.
