I just thought I'd share my experience with Boyd's. About a year ago, I placed an order for a short action pepper laminate finished stock for my Ruger .223 I waited for around 5-6 months for them to finish it which I think is pretty normal. After the wait I recieve the box and I couldn't wait to get it to the gunsmith and have him glass bed it for me. Well, I take it to him and he says it's a long action rifle stock. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif So, I called them about it and they did not have a replacement to send me. I returned the wrong stock and placed the order again about 4 months ago. 3 weeks ago, I called them and asked about the status of my order. She told me they are making them right now and they should ship out no later than 2 weeks. Sweet! It's going to get here for hunting season. So, today I made the same call asking about the status of my order. She tells me now that they are on back order and she didn't know when they were going to even start them again. Keep in mind that I already gave them the $180 for the stock. Unfortunately, if I had other options I would take them because this is the only thumbhole stock I've found that will fit my Ruger MKII .223 You guys might think hard about other options other than Boyd's unless you feel like waiting until well into next season or later before you get your stock. Fully finished, with butt pad and ready to go for a Remington HB varmint.
I had to open up the barrel channel a lot, cuz I was putting in a 40-XBBR barreled action, with a straight barrel... but that part was done in half a day.
I glassed it over night, and the 24 hours later it was ready to go.
This guy has hundreds of Boyds stocks in stock (a bad pun /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ), ready to ship.
You might try that route - best $199 I have ever spent on a stock.
Go to ebay and see if he has what you want, ready to go.

I've heard that from a couple of other folks in the last few months. It's been a couple of years since I bought one of their stocks. Sure funny how their service varies. Sorry to hear about the problems their having and you had. I liked their stock designs. Perhaps they've had a change of ownership or management. Whatever happened it sounds like there are real probloms. Thanks for the heads up.

Now I'm undecided whether I want to go with a Boyd's or something from Wenig.

I can say that my stock is good... wood is dense, and finish is flawless.
I needed a new stock, cuz what I had was a bad fit for my face. I tried some custom sock makers and considered ordering one, and not using the rifle for nearly a year... until I found the Boyds stock, ready to go, on the web.
For me it was a no brainer... a stock on the rifle NOW, is worth a lot more than a promise in the mail.

Nothing wrong with "the product"... Boyds makes stocks for many of the big gun companies (Remington and Savage come to mind)... but their customer service and attitude really suck.

The Boyds stock I got from Midway for my How is a beautiful stock, it will just take some inletting to make it fit right. I built a Sharon Hawken back in high school, that was almost 30 years ago though, not sure I want to try it myself, and not many gunsmiths in my area thatr i'd trust to do it either, so, I'm not sure what to do !

I bought a VIP pepper laminate Target Varminter stock from them a year and a half ago for a 1903 Springfield. It was in stock and took about four days to get. I just finished and Accra-glassed it the other day. Mines looks great and drive tacks. I think the key is to purchase whats in stock from them and not to special order being its takes a long time to produce apparently.
Well, I cancelled my order with Boyd's and went with a middle-man who had one left.
I can say that the stock Boyd's sent me was beautiful and fit me well, it just didn't fit my rifle.
I got a dislocated hand and severly broken wrist from a dirt bike wreck I had 2 yrs. ago. I got 12 screws and a titanium plate put in for good, but the flexion in my wrist will never be right. It really was a must for me to get a thumb-hole stock as it felt so much more comfortable to hold and shoot. The stock should be here on Monday.
