Boyds pro varmint for savage model 11

I am going to replace the factory stock on my Savage 11 predator hunter and I am thinking that the pro varmint is the only one that will work because of the heavier barrel. I was looking at the black one because I will camo it myself. Is this stock a laminate stock or solid wood? I thought it was laminate but read something someone else had posted and got the idea it wasn't.

All Boyd's stocks are laminate. I bought a Savage that had the varmint stock on it with the black finish. I removed the finish because I thought I would/could put a nice finish on the laminate wood. After removing the black finish, the wood was very grainy with alot of open pores is the wood. To me, it seemed like Boyd's used a lot of filler in the stocks they put the black finish on. I ended up using a paint with a lot of texture in it and did a Krylon camo job on it. Basically I screwed up a good finish. LOL On a side note, if you spend a little more and get their stock with the Forest camo, they look really nice. A friend has one and it is really cool looking. I have a Thumbhole in the Forest camo and really like it.

I'm not sure what the deal is with the black Pro Varmint vs one of their other laminated Pro Varmint stocks but I put a black Pro Varmint on my Savage 17 WSM and my dad put the Coyote color scheme Pro Varmint on his Ruger 77/17 HMR and there is NO comparison between the two stocks. On my black pro varmint the wood is very soft and almost seemed like Balsa wood but the wood on my dad's pro varmint in the coyote color is much harder. After having both, I would never order a black version of any of their stocks.

Its a laminate on the painted stocks but I agree with B23, they aren't the same. The wood is very porous. Like a cheap piece of plywood.

I'm typically rather un-imaginative when it comes to picking out color schemes so nearly everything I have is black stock and cerakoted black everything else, but I have to say the "Coyote" color Pro Varmint stock my dad put on his 77/17 HMR looks really good and if I was to do all over again, that's the one I'd go with.

Definitely worth the few extra bucks for sure. My friend got the adjustable cheek piece too. Looks very good!!

I just bought one a couple months ago. The guy I bought it thru said the black ones are not laminated. He suggested buying the laminate, then painting if desired. I went lam.

Its been a while since I stripped the paint off mine. I could be wrong about it being laminate, been to long to say 100% for sure. I thought it was laminate, now I'm not sure. But I do remember it was pretty crappy wood.

The ones that I have seen are laminate, but not like their standard laminates. I might even venture to guess its a fir or pine of some sort, generic "hardwood" at best.

I..h_a_t_e...black stocks. Was thinking about getting the
cheaper ProVarmint in black and stripping the paint off to do
a natural finish until seeing a photo of one. It WAS laminated,
but appeared to be balsa/pine (probably a LITTLE better than
that, but that was the appearance). Ended up going "custom"
with it and got the Forrest Camo, which is beautiful. The
"Coyote" laminate is also a "purdy" one.

They are very heavy and bulky, and when you scuff or or mark it the white pine color shows through the black paint.
