Boyd's stock and barrel cracked off to one side?

I have a savage axisbuild I'm working on with a Boyd's stock and have noticed that I really have to tighten down the action just right or it won't fit in the stock good. But no matter what I do the barrel has a lot of room on one side and on the other side it's almost touching, what causes this? Should I just take it in to s Smith and have it pillar and skimmed bed would that help?

When I restocked my Ruger American, I had basically the same problem. I had to open the barrel channel up to fit the heavier barrel on the predator model I had but did end up bedding around the front recoil lug and the action. Solved the problem for me. You can DIY on the Savage. Its pretty easy and you have the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

The uneven barrel channel is most likely just cosmetic and not actually affecting accuracy. Probably. Depending.

But when you say "I really have to tighten down the action just right or it won't fit in the stock good", that sounds like bad bedding. Which will definitely hurt accuracy.

Recent blog post: How bedding affects accuracy.

What DAA said!

The following link gives one an idea about the basics of what
one needs to do, although it is not a Savage:

I've bedded/pillared over a half dozen Boyds stocks and do so
before ever shooting the rifle. It would be almost impossible
to mill out the action area to perfection and stress free for
the action.
