Brand new gun problem already, Help!

I picked up my savage 22 250 today, got it home just minutes before dark. So I hurried up filled the clip ran outside went to load it and the bolt went in almost all the way and stopped about 1/2" short and wouldnt budge and jammed in there, so I tried taking it out and I had to tug hard to get it out. I did this twice and gave up, called the lady at Gander that sold it to me and she didnt know anything about it and told me to call the gunsmith tomorrow there. ANyone have any tips for me? I would hate to go [beeep] them out tomorrow!

You won't get anywhere doing that anyway. Most GM smiths, if they have one, are fresh out of school, or suck, or both.

Rochester store? Been there. Nice store.

Take alook at it. Maybe punch up some diagrams/info on the web. Not a very complicated action. You may be able to save yourself some headaches.

I know a guy who just sent a rifle back to CZ and it's been there 2 weeks now. I coulda "fixed" it in an hour methinks.........

Well im not sure whats wrong with it, Ive never had a gun do that too me. It just stops and wont go any further when I got the bullet in there. The bolt looked used, and the box said return on it, so im thinking someone screwed it up and returned it or something? IDK! but Im gonna at least let them look or talk to me about it, and if that doesnt work I know 2 local gunsmiths who I can get ahold of. And no I live about 3&1/2 hours north east of Rochester its the Watertown GM.

Does it seem like the chamber is too small for the shell to go in. Try putting the shell in without the bolt, if it don't go in maybe it's possible that it didn't get reamed all the way.

This might sound like a stupid question, but do you have the right ammo in it? A friend of mine grabbed a box of .270 ammo off the shelf and fired one in his new savage... only to find out the box was full of .308 ammunition. Also, A .220 swift rolled over near my .243's when I was shooting the other day. Luckily it wouldnt feed from my clip. Gotta be extra careful and check the markings even on factory ammo.

Hope you get it figured out, I love my savages.

You bought a new rifle and you think it is used? Returned? Usually stores around here won't let you return a rifle, they make you trade it in or send it back to the factory. Gander may be different.

Did you give it a good cleaning it first?

If you just bought it from Gander in the last few days I'd take it right back to them, especially if it's supposed to be new. This is after you checked all you can check.

The quality of Gander gunsmiths may be questioned, but I bet they know more than most of us, overall.

yep, take the bolt out and look through the receiver....

I agree with these guys...my money is it being the front action screw or the front scope base screws being too long,..hopefully you checked the chamber before loading it. If you look over the bullet/brass it'll probably answer your questions.

Good suggestion, I have had this happen before.

Being a savage it could also be a burr in the chamber/throat or just a rough chamber. Ever look at the machining marks in Savage barrels/chambers on a borescope? Kinda scary lookin'. It don't stop 'em from shootin', but they mine copper like a prospector. I have even had Savage bolt guns with heavy machining marks on the OUTSIDE of the receiver.............

Check the side of the rifle and make sure it is the right rifle. Make sure it says 22-250. It would not be the first time Blunder Mountain has sent the wrong rifle home in the wrong box. Also look at the brass and see if theres any markings on it from trying to chamber.
