Went out and made a few stands last night with my brother, moon was covered by clouds and we had a good 10-15 MPH, wind, both of us shooting 223’s with thermals & suppressors, so we figured we’d put the hurt on the skunks as well as the hog and coyote population.
Fist stand we call a pasture we have never called before and have a double come in from across a road and start to circle down wind at about 300 yards and then bug out, after my brothers last 350 yd shot he made at night he can’t resist and tossed a few at them on their way out.
Next stand is dry, then again we try a plowed field we have never called before and have a pair come in and start to circle downwind of the call at about 200 , my brother tells me he’ll take the one on the left that’s about 50 yard’s closer and it is notably darker than the other one , I tell him ok but let’s see how close they will come in, they work the wind another 50 yards and now his coyote has changed sides and is on my side, they start to get a little cagey and they are both looking at the call and at us. I take my shot and drop mine, my brother missed his first shot and the two more he took at his. On the way out to recover mine I mention the how different they looked in the thermals on black hot and we see why, the other one must have had some fur on it
We scan a few pastures looking for hogs and see only deer and make another stand in a pasture we have only called once before without any luck, there are a few deer in it at one end, after about 10 minutes I see what I think is a big coyote working from the downwind side , I tell my brother, and he says it looks like it has a collar on it?, I tell him its acting like a coyote and I remember seeing that look before with the thermal in NM with Tony, that coyote had a thick collar of fur that wouldn’t let the heat out. I tell my brother when he gets to 150 take him. He shoots and the coyote turns and starts to trot off he shoots again and this one must have been close as the coyote kicks it in high gear and turns 90*, I shoot and miss then double my lead and roll him. My brother says nice dam shot, we pace it off at just over 200 yards, I tell him well not as nice as his 350 on the run, he says your right it’s only 60% as good as his shot was, (brotherly love) this one looked just as bad as the first one with mange and with just a collar of fur on it. Wasn’t about to drag it back to the truck for a photo and have the pup trying to chew on it the whole way back.
Next pasture we find a couple of hogs, I have to get out of the truck and shoot over the hood, again I’m on the right and my brother counts it down, I drop mine and his runs off, he is now questioning me on the zero of his rifle
I swap rifles with him and the next pasture he chunks a skunk at about 150 yards, on the way out I chunk one at 250 with the rifle he had been shooting, and tell him nothing wrong with this gun!,,, didn’t tell him I pulled it low so it must have been shooting high, (more brotherly love)
