Browning X-Bolt Action

Guys,

Been a while since I have visited. I ran across a local gunsmith (I actually didn't know we had one) who I have confidence in to do some work for me.

I am looking for a Browning X-Bolt short action.

I know most builds are based on the 700, savage, or true customs for various understandable reasons. However, I have always preferred the A-bolt/X-bolt action. My question is, are these commercially available anywhere to buy just the action? I could always look for a donor rifle, shoot it a little, and then part it out as I start my build. That may be the route taken. But in the mean time, anyone know of where to acquire just the action?

Found a base mode x-bolt in either 223 or 204 for 519.00 shipped. Seems like the right option for a donor rifle. Sell the stock and barrel and be out maybe 300 bucks. Sound like a good idea.

Just need to decide if I want to build a 17-204 or 17-223.

I have two custom rifles built on Browning actions. Both are lazer beam accurate and kill like lighting. I went with the 17 Remington and a 17 Ackley Hornet. Bob Green of York PA is the finest gunsmith I've ever known. He is well known for his work with 17 Ackley's, amazaing accuracy. He could give you some phenomenal advice if nothing else. He's a Guru of gunsmithing.

You're never going to get $200 for a factory tupperware stock and a take-off barrel. But good luck on that.

As for the chambering, I'd go 17-223 and use Lapua cases. Make sure the reamer is spec'd right for the thicker case and you can avoid excessive turning/reaming.

Keep in mind Browning has a $50 rebate through March 31, so that could help some too.

I have to agree it will be tough to get $200 for the Browning barrel and stock.

I know there are some X-Bolts on Gunbroker for $519 with a grey synthetic stock. That stock is not the Browning "Durastock" found on the other synthetic stocked X-Bolts. The grey synthetic stock is very cheap feeling and I doubt you could get $50 for it.
