Buckshot For Coyotes?

I don't think that I will be able to agree with you on the unplated vs. plated shot though.
Plated shot is a tad heavier and since it holds its shape, should be penetrating deeper.

Most of the government hunters shooting from airplanes or helicopters swear by plated shot. They shoot an awfull lot of coyotes so should know what works. The plane based here in Elko claims to shoot up to 100 a day if the weather is good.
Just heresay, no personal experience.

I would guess an average of 50 a day would be closer to the truth.

I have used buck shot and will never do it again. If they are not close, the pattern opens too much. I have had much better luck with #4 copper-plated turkey loads out of a full choke.
 
I bought some 00 buck for my 10 guage, and it patterened really well out to 60 yards. 12 of the 18 pellets in a 30 inch circle. About a month ago I shot a coyote with a rifle and hit it in the jaw knocking it out, and it was standing about 50 yards away tail towards us and one shot with that load finished it immediately. And it is only $7.50 for 5 shells. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
The shotgun, I used to kill the(my) 50lb yote was a Marlin Model-55 12ga. 3" Bolt-Action 36" barrel Full-Choke. I'm sure someone knows a person who has one. To do their own(tests) verification, as to my previous opinion on this matter...(see for yourself)
 
I use the winchester 3.5 # 4 buck and they work great for me but since u are limited to 3" shells use the remington in #4 buck they work well also. Stay away from the 3" winchester # 4's. Use a full comp-n-choke and yoiu will be in buisness!
 
Well obviously they wouldnt pattern out of my gun and they flew everywhere! Just my experiances though out of a winchester SX2 The 3.5 #4 cleanly killed a "coyote TARGET" at 75 yards one time though.
