Looking to buy a turret scope with decent magnification for my Ruger American ranch in 223. Would like to keep it at around 200$ as this will be a truck and calling gun used for woodchucks and other varmints. Would like a decent scope allowing longer distance shooting.

There isnt anything on the market worth buying that fits your requirements. You can find decent glass for around 200, but it wont have turrets. For around another $200, you begin to get into somewhat decent options.

You could look at the Leupold Mark AR scope. It's pretty good glass and its calibrated for a 55 grain bullet out to about 600 yards. The one I have is covered turrets so you would have to unscrew the cover to access the dial however I think the new ones aren't covered at all so they are easier to access.

Maybe a used or Bargain Cave redfield battlezone. There is a 3-9x in the Rapid City Cabela's store for about $250. That's as close as you will get with any type of reliability and clarity.

The Nikon p-223 isn't a terrible option. But I don't feel it is the same quality of the Redfield.

Also, for your consideration. Check out this Cabela's branded scope. It is pretty slick. The turrets are firm, glass is serviceable. It could work out quite well for you.

Cabela's Multi-Turret.

Try this Redfield . I own one and can't complain. Very similar to a Leupy Mark AR Mod-1 but a MOA/MOA version. The reticle is a hair thicker than I would prefer, but I always run a FD given a choice.

Leupold Mark AR

This is the best thing going for anything close to the money you want to spend. The ad shows the old Mark AR, but it is actually the Mod 1 variant, which is a much better scope. This one is about 50 bucks off normal price, and includes a set of Leupold Mark 2 IMS AR scope rings.

Nothing else in your price range comes close. [beeep], this is a better scope than a lot costing considerably more.

Darn it!!! You may have just spent $300 for me. Definitely looking into that, it one on my list! And I must say I've been doing some window shopping the last week and when I picked up the Mod 1 I noticed 1) The clarity of glass compared to what I am used to, and 2) How light it was! For the price, I believe it is an excellent choice! I haven't seen a Nikon or Vortex so far in that price range that looks as clear to my eyes.

In my opinion and experience, you wont find anything within a hundred dollars that compares. The Mark AR has become my go to scope for just about everything.

Thats interesting, as the part number they list is the Mod 1, and I bought one just like it, with the mounts, about a year ago, and it is the Mod 1.

When you google that part number, you get listings from various retailers listing it as the Mod 1. I think I would call again and ask someone else. That part number, and those mounts, were a special run done by Leupold about a year ago..a Mod 1 with 2 piece IMS mounts that were never available separately.

I agree. The older Mark AR, which was nothing more than the even older Mark 2, bore completely different part numbers, as they were sold side by side with the Mod 1s for a time.

+1 on the Mark AR. I have one on my DPMS Prairie Panther and love it. Great scope for the money. Cabelas had a special when I bought mine. Leopold mount and scope for 349.99.

LOL, last time I recommended this brand on this site, if I remember correctly, another member had just received one and would shortly return it for not holding zero.

All I can write is that I own two of them and they are mounted on something like a 7x57 or 308 rifle. Both scopes have had a fair number of rounds fired with them mounted and zero problems with mine.

So, for your consideration, check www.sportsmansguide.com for Leatherwood scopes. Three versions available....priced below your $200 limit. All have turrets. One is a 4-16 power scope. I own two of the 6-24 version. Decent optics, turrets track well too and markings on the side parallax seem to be correct too. By the way, if you visit the Leatherwood website, you'll not find them....evidently only Sportsmans has them.

FWIW, lots of Leatherwood reviews on Sportsman to read about them.
