I would certainly rather have a good 3-9X than a crap 4-12/16X. Even at 4-500 yards. I can consistently hit an 8" plate at 500 with 9X optics.

Thats dang good but can you hit a tennis ball (Richardson ground squirrel size) the same way ? And a standing p-dog avg adult is 8 inches tall and 4 inches wide simular to a bowling ball pin, the young are MUCH smaller. Was your plate 8x8 or 8x4 ??? pahntr760 do you ever make it to Eastern Idaho ? And by the way i only have one crap 4-16,,, I have two crap 6-24s two crap 8.5-25 one crap 10-40 and one crap 12-50 ... And in all my years i had only one crap scope fail and thats when i learned a quick detach sling can quick detach when your not expecting it to detach !

The truth of the matter is, I don't use "budget" scopes for dedicated varmint rifles. I also do not build multi-purpose rifles. Each one fills a niche and does it as well as I can muster for that intended use.

It was a round target. Fwiw.

I understand that you and I will never come to an agreement, but I stand by this statement: I will buy higher quality and lower powered scopes before buying a higher powered and lower quality scope.

This is also the last time I will make this statement in reference to you. I've already wasted too much time and bandwidth on it.

Well here is a good one for you,,, i had an SKS with crap 2-6 power mini scope and once dialed in could hit a 24x24 plate @ 600 yards 100% no wind,,, using tuna fish canned ammo rested off of my buddys 2x4 cabin deck hand rail. That crap scope is now on one of my M1 carbines the scope is 27 years old and my son ran it ipsic rifle years ago. I think i paid a whole 30 dollars for it back then.... pahntr760 i have ? for you. Have you ever even shot a coyote? or shot at one?

A 4 MOA SKS. That in itself is impressive

Are you asking because you've never actually seen a dead coyote.?

I was gonna suggest a Nikon M223 3x12 with BDC but apparently I'm overglassed here.Still waiting to hear of 1000 yd 17HMR. That SKS is pretty close thou.

I had the Bushnell in that power. I was incredibly unimpressed. I felt the glass was very poor, the turrets mushy, and the overall design of the scope lacking in just about every way. That gun now wears a Leupold Mark AR 4-12.

If I had more money to spend then yeah I would get one of those higher end scopes. But I'm building a budget 223 bolt gun useing a 400 dollar rifle. I already have a axiom with a Nikon Prostaff 5 on top of it. I'm building this rifle to carry around in the truck and pop woodchucks and other varmits plus shoot a few fox and coyotes here and there. It's a play gun. 223 rounds are cheaper and easier to find than 22-250 rounds for my axiom or 270 rounds for my savage.

Zane,

You can easily get by with less power on a .223. Think less power....better glass....same price. I'd look some nice used ones. It's a great way to upgrade glass for less jack. Try the campfire classifieds.

http://www.amazon.com/UTG-4-16X44-Compac...ords=4-16+scope $138.49

Zane stay in the 4-18 4-16 power range, you will be happier!

I have this compact 4-16x44 with side focus, it works very well and the housing is strong plus if you ever need it, a lighted mil dot rectical,,, what i really like is its compact and a perfect fit for the ar-15 comes with 30mm rings another $20 plus savings and depending on where you buy it free shipping.and has a very good rating at optics planet. Also comes with flip up lens covers and the turrets if you want can easily be locked down to prevent accidental movement.... now laugh away guys !!!!
