I have a savage 110 .243, looking to build a fierce varmint rig, looking for any info on stocks and barrels amd anything else i could add to make it a beast.

I thought about rebarreling to a .308 or a bull barrel .243, pros and cons of the two?

A big thanks in advance on any tips or info

This is my starting point

Is that a 26" varmint bbl on it as it sits?
Building it yourself also?
.308...loud and much more recoil....less wind drift though.
.243...still loud but faster with any bullet to 85g.
If its not going to be carried Id go with a 26" varmint contour bbl, B&C medalist stock with the full alum bed in it.
For a carry gun id drop to a 24" bbl, keep everything else as it is.

Mcgowan, ER Shaw, CBI, benchmark, brux bbls will handle all the rounds and they can be had in anything you want. I use McGowans & ER Shaws & so far and they are super accurate on my Savages.

Not sure on whats on it now, ive had the gun for 8 years and just picked it up after 4, it wont be utilized as a carry gun very often if at all, thanks for the imputs, looks like i got a lot of research to do!

Boyds stock and .243 18.5" McGowan barrel from Savage-Barrels.com

I'll also say to go over to Savageshooters but SAVE YOUR MONEY and don't pay for membership no matter how many people chime in over there and tell you how great it is. Membership there is worth about 10 cents.

I have a .243 with a 1:10 twist and the 85g bullet is ideal for it, however any heavier or longer bullet and the accuracy falls off so I recomend a faster twist if rebarreling.

How much more accuracy can be achieved by changing out the stock? I have one that looks just like the one in the opening post....Savage 110 in .243 Win. I have considered adding a varmint-weight barrel, but hadn't thought much about the stock. Is the factory synthetic lacking in ability? (I know it lacks in looks, but I wanted to camo-paint it anyway).

Thats a good lookin rig cb.. kinda what i wanna go for, anthough i dont know about going with a shorter barrel, although i know im wanting a faster twist in my next barrel

I believe McGowan lists 243 AI as a standard price they have
. Just as long as your rifle will chamber once it's built

How does it shoot now? I would also start with a stock upgrade. I would then look at some high dollar glass on top. Don't spend your money on a barrel if yours will shoot .5's. Some Savage rifles shoot well right out of the box.

How's your trigger? A crappy trigger can open up groups if you are uncomfortable with it? Is the barrel touching the forearm or flexing? If not you might be able to bed the stock you have or leave it alone. Have you exhausted your load development? Sometimes a .5gr. difference in a load can get a 1/2" bigger in groups. Look at seating depth, it makes a huge difference sometimes. Try a shorter bipod, there is lots of room for flex in those long legs. Make sure you are a .5" shooter as well. Nothing personal, but .5" groups rarely happen "all day long" for people at the range, it only works on the internet. I have several guns that have shot groups in the teens and .20's, but I have also shot them around 1" too on the bad days

. I'll take an everytime .8" shooter over an occasional .5" shooter with 1.2" tendencies

. You very well could have the varminter you need in your hands already with a little work. BTW, 243 is great varmint medicine, keep us posted.

Like 9 Horses and AR Corey say, you may have exactly what you need already.
A good trigger is a lot of what a good rifle is all about..
Often times you can shoot good groups with a low end scope
But in the long run a good scope will not let you down. . And the view thru a good scope is Really nice!!!.

If you really Want to build a new rifle. Well probably everyone here can understand that

Your Savage .243 is already "built" and its already a "varmint rifle". Save your money....

Shoot it for 25 years at varmints, and when the barrel is shot out, re-barrel it.

I agree, shoot it. If you are going through the expense of building a gun
go with a 6br or Dasher (6br improved) . Why limit yourself to the .243 .

Seeing as how it is a long action, if i did rebarrel it, I would chamber it for a long action round. 6mm-06 comes to mind. Maybe even a 6mmAI.

Otherwise, the 243 Win is a great cartridge "as is"......
