Building an SBR?

I just picked up a stripped lower and was wondering what I would have to do in order to build it up into an SBR. I know I'd have to either due a form 4 or trust, and actually just ordered a trust today through NFALawyer. Do I just register it as an SBR once the trust arrives? Once it is built into an SBR can it only ever be and SBR or could I put a long barreled upper on and swap back and forth? Any help would be appreciated.

Once you have the receiver with the S/N, transfer it to the form 4 and submit it as an SBR. Once it is approved you can use it as and SBR with any barrel under 16" as well as any barrel over 16".

Next question. Sorry. Do I have to take it to a class III dealer to do this or can I download a form 4 fill it out and send it in?

If you build an SBR you need to submit a Form 1 (request to manufacture a firearm). If you buy a complete SBR that is ready to go then you file a Form 4 (transfer).

You can download the form and fill it out yourself. There are plenty of templates and examples online to help you. You could also sign up and submit on the ATF efile sight. I actually just submitted a Form 1 online for my second SBR this morning......took 15 minutes.

My most recent build/SBR build (8.3 inch .300 B/O) took 99 days for the form 1 approval

Is that a Silencerco Omega? How do you like it

Yes its an Omega. I really like it. I have several weapons set up with omega brakes and flash hiders and swap the can from rifle to rifle in seconds. I have all the end caps (anchor brake, 7.62 flat, and 5.56 flat cap) I run the 7.62 flat cap and anchor brake the most as I use it on .223 AR's, 300 B/O AR's, and 6.8 AR's, soon to be AR .308, and a .223 bolt gun and don't want to make the mistake of forgetting and shooting the 5.56 flat cap while using one of my larger calibers weapons. The mount system is great and everything stays tight and I have had zero issues swapping from weapon to weapon. I also have a YHM suppressor that that I like as well.

Two other APC staff have Omega's also (one can is in jail).

My form 1 took 22 days but I already had an existing trust with NFA item on it.I was told to list barrel as the smallest possible. That would allow me to run any length barrel between 16 and what was listed on the form 1. I was also told you had to put a caliber and that multi was no longer accepted. I can't verify the validity of these 2 claims.

Thanks Sir I currently have an Omega waiting to be transferred to dealer and like hearing what others think of their's

I have a couple SBR's via the efile form 1 route. As far as the eform filing you need to list the caliber of the SBR you are going to build once approved. Even if your stripped lower has "5.56" or "Multi Cal" marked on it, and your are going to build a 300 blackout for example. you list the cal as "300"..

You will also be listing the barrel length and overall length of the weapon. Most "internet key board NFA lawyers" will tell since you are registering and engraving your trust info on the lower, once its approved, the upper caliber and barrel length make no difference, so you can build several SBR uppers (as long as you can convert the weapon back to its original approved configuration). Remember NEVER install a SBR upper on a non NFA approved lower and never posses / build a SBR upper if you don't have an approved SBR NFA lower.

Also pay attention to what you name your trust.. short and simple may be better because you will have to engrave the full trust name, city, and state on the lower.

You will be submitting your completed trust and efiling the form 1 at the same time

again AR-15.com's SBR forum is your friend

Good luck with your build,

AP
