Bushnell 4200 or 3200?

O.K. guys, I am needing to get a scope for the new rifle we bought my dad for Christmas. I am thinking about a Bushnell 3200, but was wondering how big of a difference in quality is there between the 3200 and 4200 series. Is the difference worth spending the 200 extra dollars for. I have also been looking at a Burris Fullfield II 3-9X variable scope. I have a straight 6X Burris scope that I really like. What do you guys think? 3200,4200, or Burris? The 4200 is getting a bit out of my price range, so I hope their isn't a big difference between the two.

Get the Burris 3x9 power with Ballistic-Plex (I have one on my .308 Rem M-788). I have two 4200 B&L 's (1.5-5 power and a 2.5-10x50mm) and like them both. I like the "Aim points" that the Ballistic Plex provides. You will not be disappointed.

Best of luck,

I agree with Karl.... Go with the Burris Ballistic Plex! I've got a 3.5x10 on my AR and I love it. The ballistic marks are great for holdover on longer shots. I'm getting a 3x9 for my Browning Micro Hunter 223 I use for a calling/truck gun. That said, I've pretty much heard nothing but good about the Bushnell's. Greg

Thanks for the respones, so far. Yote poker, I have looked at the Nikon's pretty hard because I know they are a good scope for the money, but I am afraid I spent most of my budgeted money on the gun, and right now that scope is just out of my price range at $300 in Cabela's. I know I could get it cheaper, so we will have to see. O.K. guys, you will have to explain to me how the ballistic plex reticle works. Is it calibrated for a certain load and velocity or is it adjustable? My dad will use this rifle as an all purpose gun shooting coyotes and prairie dogs with 55-70 grain bullets and then switching to 100 grain bullets for deer. Obviously, these different loads will have different ballistic characteristics and therefore different holdovers at a certain distance. I checked Burris' website, and it appeared as though the reticle was calibrated for a certain load, but I may be wrong. Thanks again for all your responses. Also, what do you guys think about Weaver scopes?

Someone always has to be different. i have a 3200 and a burris and like the bushnell over the burris hands down. just my 2 cents

My Ballistic Plex came with a list of a dozen+ calibers listing mostly one, sometimes 2 bullet weights, at a certain velocity, which supposedly should match("be close to")the reticle. However, with all variables you really need to go to the range and shoot distance so you know where your bullet choice is actually shooting. Just bought a 3x9 at Cabela's for a couple pennies short of $200. So far, for the money, I'v been happy with all my Burris scopes. The Ballistic Plex just helps take some of the guess work out of holdover on longer shots and makes it a little easier (hopefully!) to score. You need to do your part too, but every little bit helps! I LOVE my 3200!! I also have a Burris signature 3x9 but prefer the Elite 3200 because of the thick easy to find crosshairs & the "foxproof"- rain feature. Wish they were on my other rifles.

try the 3200 they have a great offer if you don't like it for any reason they will take it back for up to a year. take a look at the fire fly retical you may like it. the cross hairs are thick and it may not be a great long range p. dog scope but if you do any low light hunting you will love it.

I am very happy with my 3200 Elite (3x9). The fogproof coating seems to be working great, at least compared to past experience in similar hunting conditions.

I've got two 3200's and two 4200's. They are great scopes and I can't tell the difference in them optically. As far as construction goes, the 4200 is machined out of one piece of titanium where the 3200 turret assembly is separate from the main tube and is sealed around the joint. Obviously the 4200 is more expensive to produce. The other benefit to the 4200 is a 4x zoom vs the 3200's 3x zoom, no big deal. Both my 4200's have target knobs, and very repeatable adjustments. I have more trigger time behind the 4200's as the 3200's are both recent purchases. I'd say go with the 3200 and save some $$$. The warranty is great on either.

I do not have either one (3200/4200) but I have heard so many good things about them that when it comes time for me to rescope I'll look at them a lot closer.

I have scopes in both the elite 3200 & 4200 series. The 4200 is on a 22-250 that I use for pdog hunting. I think the optics are a bit better on the 4200, but the 3200 is without question a great scope. The 3200 is on a .221 fireball. I really like that setup. In the price range I think its really tough to beat. I believe the price difference is about $100 between the two series. If the $100 difference breaks the bank..no worries. The 3200 will do everything the 4200 can. Check out www.natchezss.com they have good prices on Bushnell scopes.

As far as I know....the Bushnell Elite 4200 tube is made from aluminum, not titanium.

I have the Elite 4200 6X24 and love it. However, I got mine at a great price because I live 5 miles from Buschnell's headquarters and I really didn't do much comparing. With that said, other hunters who are more "sophisticated" than myself and extremely impressed with the optics. I also have it on an AR15.

Good luck

I've got a Bushnell 3200 3X9 on my flattop AR, a 4200 6X24 on my Ruger .308 and a Leupold Vari-X II on my Tikka .243. Both Bushnell's are as clear and bright, if not more so than the Leupold. For $159 I paid for the 3200, I got a lot scope. Go with the Bushnell 3200, you won't be dissapointed.

I am also looking at scopes to top my ar and I think that I have settled on the burris 4.5x14 with the ballistic plex. I have a bushnell banner 6x18 on it now and am not happy at all, but that really isn't a fair comparison because I looked at some of the higher bushnell's and they seemed to be really nice scopes...when the burris came out of the box the differance in quality was immediatly apparent and for $300 I don't think that I can go wrong.

I just wanted to thank all of you for your responses. I finally decided on the Bushnell 3200. I got a heck of a deal on it through Natchez Shooters Supply. I really like the scope. It is very clear. My Dad's rifle hasn't come in yet, so we havn't had a chance to officially test the scope out yet. Thanks again for everyone's help.
