bushnell 4200 vs Nikon and Burris

I have been in the market for a new scope for my RRA a4 varmint. I have been searching ebay and every other sight you can imagion looking for the best scope for the bucks($$).
I have all but insisted on a 50mm objective and target turrets, I Live in Ohio and my main targets are woogchucks and crows....coyotes to but so far no luck. My shots range from 30-400 plus so I figured a 3-10 or a 4-12 would be perfect. I found a great deal on a 4200 4-16x50 for alot less than a monarch or fullfeild in the same range.
Are the 4200's that good? I'm leary of Bushnells reputation for low to mid level scopes. But I here these are the exception. Your advice is appreicated very much.

Take a look at the Nikon buckmaster 4.5-14x42. Its got great light transmission and has finger adjustable knobs, they are bassicaly target turtets.

The bushnell Elite (used to be Bausch and Lomb) 3200 and 4200 scopes are my favorite scopes and I have more of them than any other type. They are known for giving a great deal of bang for the buck.

Just wondering, why only a 50mm? If you hunting in the dark or in darkened conditions I can see where the 50mm lense would be good to have. For crows and woodchucks a 40 would get the job done just fine especially in the relatively low power ranges your looking at.

The Elite 4200 series scopes are excellent in my opinion. The 32 and 4200 series are a whole different animal than the standard Bushnell line. For woodchucks and crows the 4200 4x16 would be great. Like Gary said, the 2.5x10 would be excellent for coyotes. I always go with 40mm scopes since I have no need for a 50mm, so I can't comment on the 50mm.

Check out The Optic Zone if you want to compare prices, lengths, and weights of different scopes. The Optic Zone usually has really good prices on Elite scopes also, and the service is top notch.

The only drawback I see to the Elite lineup is they are usually an inch or so longer and 2-3 ounces heavier than say a Leupold VX-III.

If your main target is woodchucks and crows out to 400, with an occasional coyote...

Check out the Nikon Buckmasters 6-18x40 w/side focus and target turrets for $300-$350. Choose from 3 different recticles. It comes with two sets of turrets and a scope shade.

Why do you want a 50mm objective? Seems unnecessary.

I have the same scope as Stiff Neck on my AR. I am very pleased with it. I was surprised at how well it picks up light at the start and end of the day.

The elite 4200 seems like a nice scope to me, I don't own one though.

Stiff neck, where in Northern Ca are you?

I have a Bushnell 3200 3x9 firefly on my muzzleloader and like it alot.I also have a Bushnell Elite 4200 6x24x40 on my Bushmaster varminter.Love them both. You can't go wrong with upper end Bushnells.

Another point on objective lens size. Higher end scope will pull in more light than a medium priced scope will. I have a Simmons scope with a 44mm lens and have had several other scopes with 44mm objectives, my 40mm Elites have always been brighter. Objective lens size value is a subjective thing. For instance out here in much of the west there is actually to much light for all day shooting. There was a time that I'd turn to my lower quality scopes to give my eyes a break from the sun. .... sounds odd, but it's true.

I have (2) Elite 4200's (4-16x40); one of which is mounted on my AR-15. I personally prefer them to my Burris and Leupold scopes and they're not that far behind my (3) Zeiss Conquests. Dollar for dollar, I think they are one of the best deals out there; very clear and bright.

Thanks alot guys, I guess the reason I mentioned 50 mm is because I'm curranty using a Tasco 6-24x44 with Burris tactical rings(which absolutly rock),anyways, the 44 looks ok I just thought 6 more mm might not be a bad thing. And most of the scopes I looked at that had target turrets where in the 42-50mm range.
I missed out on my great deal for the 4200, got out bid at the last second. But I'll keep looking.
Thanks again. Dallas

I rarely find a true good deal on E-bay for rifle scopes. I've chased more than one B&L scope and lost at the very last minute.

It's funny you mentioned Tasco. I had one of the old Tasco Target Varmint scopes, it was a 6x24 44mm, all around a great scope for the money, but it didn't come close to the light gathering ability of my B&L 6x24 40mm 4000 Elite, the essentiually the same scope as the Bushnell 4200 elites.

What he said. I have 4-16x on a 221 Fireball and a 6-24x on a 220 Swift. Best bang for the buck. If it aint as sharp /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif as my Conquest it pretty dang close. Clear as gin and fun to let people look through. I have Leupolds and Bushnells too, but the 3200 and 4200 Bushnell cant be beat.

You also might want to check out the Browning scopes, which are Bushnell 4200's without the rainguard. Natchez is closing them out at really great prices. I've always been a Leupold person, but the 5X15X40 Browning I got is really a clear and bright scope. Well worth the $199.95.
It won't be used for predator hunting, way to much magnification for me, but I installed it on a Rem. 504 rimfire and I am impressed. I ordered one of the 2X7 Browning scopes to try on a 17Rem. for Coyotes. $124.95 is cheaper than I can get a used VXII 2x7 for.
