Took my boy out this morning and we made a few stands with nothing to show at first so we stopped at a new property I have. We headed south to get away from the truck about 200 yards and around the corner of the bush thinking we were far enough away from the truck, with a light east wind in our face we set up overlooking a 50 acre pocket. Well 15 minutes in, my son says "dad, there's one behind us" Sure enough it came out right behind my truck to the west of us and walked right into our scent, looked at us then ducked into the bush and gone. I never thought one would come out from right were we parked but I guess anything can happen. He's new to coyote hunting so he thought it was best to sit still figuring it would come searching for the sound when he should have swung the rifle on it. He'll learn

You bring up something that always plagues me…where to start?
About the only thing I can do is go out and call to see if I get any responses and mark them on OnX and come back when the wind is right for those areas. Ain’t no telling how many coyotes I ride by even in those situations.
I have set up to where I thought they’d be only to have them sound off downwind. When that happens I just pack up and leave.

Spurchaser, That's what we did, just quietly left. We'll come back to that spot with a different tactic next time.

I don't think the coyote actually saw us, just smelled us and I think that's normal thing for them to experience with human interaction. In my mind I figure they just think a human got a rabbit as it reminds me of time I was goose hunting and it was slow so we pulled the decs and headed into the bush to try for rabbits. Not long in I shot one and instead of carrying it I slung it into a hawthorn tree to pick up on the way back. Well as we came back around half hour later there was a coyote trying to jump up to get the rabbit out of the bush. He knew we were there but didn't care. He took off though as soon as he spotted us coming.
