Has anyone played with the factory stock on these rifles? My buddy bought one and it seems to shoot ok, but was wondering if it is possible to bed the action. The trigger adjustment is nice, 1.5# on my digital scale.

If he is, I have one. the stock is ok. Mine shoots 1/2" at a hundred yards so I never considered bedding it.

I bought one last Feb. but haven'e but a scope on it yet. I had another barrel waiting on parts at the time (ARP TAC6). I've only had the TAC 6 out once and the 12 is still sitting in the corner waiting for optics. Someday it'll happen.

Yes the 12 fv, I pulled the stock off, forend is the honeycomb type structure. What I noticed is the barreled action rocks forward and back in the stock with the screws removed. This rifle is in 204r, and is the first 204 I have seen that doesn't shoot well under 1 moa. I torqued the screws to 25 inch pounds, my buddy wants to shoot at 200 yards, before we go play with prairie dogs.

Yup - pillar block and bed the action. Stiffen the forend if you want. 25inlb is a little low for the Savage, especially in a loose fitting, slippery poly stock.

The stock screws were less than 25 inch pounds when I removed them, What should I torque to? The stock seems to be stiffer than the TC venture stocks. If the torqued screws doesn't help, I maybe able to talk him into bedding job.

Loosen all action screws, tighten front to 15 in lb, bounce rifle butstock on the floor to seat action into stock. tighten front screw to 40 in lb and rear to 30 in lb.

nockhunter is correct, the factory specs were 45 inch pounds at one time but i haven't looked in years. Check the front of the stock on the left side to see if it's making contact with the barrel, most of them in the past did so. Simply sand paper the stock there until you can slide 3-5 dollar bills in and out without it dragging or binding when the rifle is put together and torqued down.

No clearance issues with 3 bills. I torqued the stock screws to the suggested, screws seem to dead stop and then torque is reached. Thanks.

I agree with Varminterror, you need lots of space on those. That heavy barrel puts a lot of weight out on the end of the forearm when it is setting in your shooting rest. When it is warm or when you shoot a lot the forearm gets softer and will flex more. I have a number of Savages and the HB's need more space than a sporter barrel. I usually have at least an eight of an inch. I have good shooters with the factory stocks.
