cabelas scope

I have a 6.5-20X42 w/ mildot on my .243 Win. Have had no problem w/ it holding zero, clarity is acceptable, but after recently purchasing 2 Burris scopes, would opt for another Burris before I purchased another of these.

Gotcha, I won't deal with our Lehi Cabela's, I was told over the phone today, before I had even asked that they will only match prices in the Prove, Orem, SLC area, I told the salesperson, that since I was from the Ogden area, that they must not need my business then ! I wish Bass Pro Shops would open a decent store here, Cabelas and Sportsmans warehouse might learn a thing or two !

Gotchanow,

Maybe someone can correct me on this, but my understanding is that the manufacturer of the Cablea's line of scopes is a closely guarded secret. I read a post on a different forum last year from a man that had a good friend that worked in management at Cabela's for several years and he did not know who made the scopes.

The big question I have is: Why buy a Cabelas scope? The price of their Alaskan Guide series is $279-359. For $299 I can buy a 3x9 40mm Luepold vxII. Also, you can get the Nikon Buckmaster for the same price. I would much rather spend the same money and know who the maker is, and that it is a company that has a good track record.

Cabelas also has a Pine Ridge line that is inexpensive. If you are wanting a scope just to target practice or shoot cottontails it probably isn't a big deal, but when I consider the money I spend on gas, meals, etc to go on a hunt, the extra $100 on a good scope is a good investment. I learned that lesson the hard way several years ago in NW Colorado. I had purchased a 7mm mag that already had a scope with the brand "Munson Sporting Goods" painted in bright white letters. I zeroed the scope before we left Calif for the hunt but then a few days later, I shot 11 times at broadsided 4x4 mulie at 200 yards that must have been deaf (and missed all 11 times). I came home and tested that scope and it never would hold a zero for long. Munson Sporting Goods??? What was I thinking? I will never make that mistake again.

hello..i agree with calcoyote...they very well may be fantastic scope's...although when i spend my money i would prefer to spend it on a proven winner...

Both of my Cabela's Alaskan Guide Scopes were made by Asia Optical. Not much of a secret, either, as both scopes had Asia Optical stickers right on them...

Asia Optical is a huge Taiwanese manufacturer. They build to customer specs for lots of more recognizable "brand names".

DAA,

I just did an online chat with the customer service of Cabelas and they said that they were not allowed to publish the maker of the scopes. This was private information that only the purchasing dept knows. But he did state that it was a company Japanese company. If your scopes have the label of a Taiwanese company (like you say) this probably means that Cabelas probably puts this out to bid every couple of years. In other words the same company that has the contract this year to make them might not be the same company as next year. This should not be a problem as long as Cabelas compels them to make them to their specificaitons.

He did confirm that Cableas offers a full lifetime warranty for material defects and workmanship. That is a good warranty but I still prefer the Leupold or Nikon.

They buy from makers in Taiwan and China, these are emerging industries that are makeing pretty good products for many "Brand Names"A lot of the high end scope makers are getting lenses from the Chinese and Taiwan. It used to be Japan and germany but they have gotten to high end for many affordable optics makers.

I have had two alaskan guides and have been very impressed with both of them. I do most of my coyote callin under full moon with no lights and have been very impressed with light gathering capabilities. They have a nice sized crosshair for low light shooting. The one downside to them is that they don't have alot of eye relief.
