I work at a Major credit card company and will tell you that it's kind of a game with your credit score..
The combination of what you make, against your available credit, measured against you payment history is about as basic as it gets.
Look for cards that are no fee. paying a fee is a waste. Don't charge anything you can't pay for in 30 days.
Also I would suggest that you get a new card in several places a couple a year. NEVER close them, unless they start jerking you around and you should open a new one or two a year to get the score as high as possible. You should try to rotate using them, and the rewards are not worth using one over another, the reward comes from a higher credit score and lower payments when you buy big ticket things like cars and houses.
The difference in credit score can make the difference between a good and great score can mean 1 or 2 percentage points and that could mean hundreds of dollars that you can spend on other things.
As for Cabela's and the rest, send in the payment 5 days before the due date or pay on online 5 days early and you won't have an issue. Most give you a break on the due date, but not cabella's. If it's not in their hand on the day it's due they charge $25.
Also since we are talking about finance and money, if you have a car payment and you can make half the payment at the beginning of the month and the other half mid month, it's called (bi-monthly payments) just doing this with a 5 year car loan will cut almost a year off the payments. It has to do with the way that interest is calculated and assessed in the computer systems. Doing the same thing on your home loan can save you years off a 30 yr loan. Pay the same get more for your money.
