Cabela's Visa users?

I work at a Major credit card company and will tell you that it's kind of a game with your credit score..
The combination of what you make, against your available credit, measured against you payment history is about as basic as it gets.
Look for cards that are no fee. paying a fee is a waste. Don't charge anything you can't pay for in 30 days.
Also I would suggest that you get a new card in several places a couple a year. NEVER close them, unless they start jerking you around and you should open a new one or two a year to get the score as high as possible. You should try to rotate using them, and the rewards are not worth using one over another, the reward comes from a higher credit score and lower payments when you buy big ticket things like cars and houses.
The difference in credit score can make the difference between a good and great score can mean 1 or 2 percentage points and that could mean hundreds of dollars that you can spend on other things.

As for Cabela's and the rest, send in the payment 5 days before the due date or pay on online 5 days early and you won't have an issue. Most give you a break on the due date, but not cabella's. If it's not in their hand on the day it's due they charge $25.
Also since we are talking about finance and money, if you have a car payment and you can make half the payment at the beginning of the month and the other half mid month, it's called (bi-monthly payments) just doing this with a 5 year car loan will cut almost a year off the payments. It has to do with the way that interest is calculated and assessed in the computer systems. Doing the same thing on your home loan can save you years off a 30 yr loan. Pay the same get more for your money.

Rock Knocker--- My wife and I have had a Cabela's card for 8 years. They are top notch to deal with. We use our card for everything. When our bill arrives every month we write a check for the ENTIR#E amount immeadiately...EVERY TIME. We have never carried a balance so we have never paid one cent to them for interest. The free gear we get is awesome. Its a great card if used properly. Good Luck Hope it works out for you.

Funny how some think you have to have a credit card...35yrs and haven't had the need for one yet. And yes I have a house and vehicles and travel and rented cars and movies and a really really low interest rate on mortgage!!!
Like Dave says one of the biggest fleecings of the past few generations is everyone talking how you have to have a credit card to build your credit!

Not knocking those that do have one and use it wisely but you don't have to have one. For everyone of you that do you use wisely there's probably another 15 or more that don't and end up in trouble. Too many people I know started out the same way...just one and I know what to do...ended up way more stress and pain because of it. I don't want the temptation or the door even in my house to end up going down that road.

Use cash. So you miss out on a couple rewards points..oh well. The problem is not with you not having a cc it's with the lender you are trying to use. Use that link that Stu posted and carry on.

I use the Cabala's card without problems for several years. Recently I went to get gas and the card was rejected , tried it again at a different place, same thing. Finally called and they said that someone in 'New Britain' got a hold of a bunch of their numbers and was trying to get $2.50 cash. That's pretty weird but I guess they had thousands of numbers and probably didn't think anyone would notice the $2.50 transaction. Someone did complain and it led to a whole bunch of deactivation's, mine included. I did have a couple of online purchases where the card wouldn't work, that was because of the amount of the purchase and that it was from on overseas address. Cabala's was flagging those for safety reasons. I do like getting the rewards up to enough to pay for most of my ammunition shipping. Pay it off every month and use it, it's real handy.

It's all about being RESPONSIBLE !!! If you can't be ... then you obviously don't need credit cards.

I love them because it keeps me from having to carry large sums of cash. Using my Cabelas card for everyday spending gets me lots of points that I've used towards their merchandise. I have never received a monthly statement that I did not pay off in full at that exact moment. You simply can't make the charges, if you can't fully pay for them. If you view credit card companies as lenders ... you are in BIG trouble!

I say, be responsible & enjoy using your Cabelas card.

I have a Cabelas card, like most others have said, just becareful with it. I can tell you from experience, it is nice to see that new rifle, scoped or whatever and you think oh, I can just put it on the credit card, well that tends to come around and smack you in the face when all of a sudden you have 3-4k racked up and your paying $75-$80 a month just in interest.

Luckily I learned my lesson, paid it off and now I pretty much only use it for things like recurring bills and work expenses where I will get perdiem and just pay it off at the end of the month.

Just so you have an idea on the amount of points you get, I spend between 7,500 and 10,000 a year and normally have about $100 to spend at Cabelas when we go on vacation which is roughly once a year.

As far as compared to other credit cards that I have had, it was the 2nd lowest interest rate, no annual fee and they have been decent to work with.

One last thing though, I wouldn't expect them to ever come down on their initial interest rate, I had the card for about 2 years and had multiple others for various reasons, I like to keep them seperate for things like farm house and work expenses ect., anyway, although they had a pretty low interest rate to start with for me, they are the only ones that would not lower the interest rate after my credit score had gone up significantly.

I to have a cabelas and a chase rewards. I pay them off every month no matter how much they are. Cabelas is good about notifying you of possible theft. Twice they have put my account on hold called me and asked if I made the purchases in question. Both times they were fraud. They sent me new cards. I pay my insurance and other larger ticket things with plastic. I like the free stuff I get. However I pay them OFF every month. I never have paid a dime in interest. There is also some protection buying with a card. I never spend more than I can pay for in a month. I also respect those who don't have them. The majority of the people are not disaplined enough to use one properly.

My 2 cents.

Well I got a letter from them late last week saying I didnt have enough credit to get one of their cards. I just got a new phone yesturday because my other one went down in a duck pond with me.

I got off the phone with the lady a couple minutes ago. Apparently I need to have another credit card to get one of their cards.

With fear I will wear out the [beeep]
