When I trapped I never lifted or set my cable stakes. I figured let the animal do it, then when it came time to pull them if I hadn’t got a catch I just put the rod back down the hole into the stake and pulled it out easy. I did trap in heavy dirt fields but cable stakes work well. Something to think about.
