Cage Trapped Skunk

Hi all,

Need an answer here if possible. I leghold trapped for years before we got shut down here in Arizona, never caught a skunk... didn't mind that a bit. Now I live in Northern AZ and am building a chicken coop which I hope to populate next spring. Problem is that I have a number of feral cats and grey fox around my property. One grey recently came into my garage while I was cutting reeds and tuning up a couple of my open reed calls, thats how thick they are in the neighborhood. I would like to "relocate" a few of these critters before spring, (and my chickens), arrive. My concern is that we have a number of skunks hanging around as well. If one of them gets in a cage trap.... how the heck do you get him out without him spraying???? I only have a couple of year round neighbors but I am sure they would be displeased - not to mention the wife - if I got the whole area reeking of skunk. Any suggestions - other than "very carefully" would be appreciated!

Thanks!
Bill

we suspend a canvas tarp over the live trap here when ya catch the skunk drop the tarp over him "most" of the time they won't spray then

Thanks bowjunkie. It is the "most of the time" that bothers me...... LOL! Lets see, wrap it up in the tarp, put cage and all in the back of the Expedition...... I am smelling disaster... no pun intended! Hmmmm, I guess keep 'em dark, keep em quiet but when They are "relocated" will they release the perfume?

It is best to start off with a covered trap if you're expecting skunks. Cut a box to fit and make sure you cut a hole for the handle.

Otherwise, get an old blanket and or a plastic tarp (not see through), hold it in front of you and above your head. Then walk towards the trap slowly. Baby half steps being carefully not to trip. Some say to talk gently to them as you approach to keep them calm. I am usually just quiet and it works fine. Once you get the trap covered no big deal. You can carry it anywhere without worry. Then its up to you and your method of euthanasia. PM me and I can give you suggestions on that, if you want something other than open the door and blast it when its out far enough not to spray you.

And if that doesn't work:

1 quart hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
teaspoon Dawn dishwashing soap

Lather, rinse, repeat

Lather, rinse, repeat....... oh this is not good...

Maybe just two layers of chicken wire around the coop!

Thanks TDM! I appreciate the advice.

I have caught them a number of times while live trapping feral cats. Use a trap that's not big enough for them to do a handstand in, and cover it with burlap. I never had a problem, and even transported one in my mom's van once (in the trap) along with several (loud) teenage boys on the way to a little league game.

Just stand back a little when you release them so they don't feel threatened.

Thanks Leon, advice appreciated. Truth is I am mostly concerned with the cats and will be more than happy to help them meet their maker. The greys are fun to see around, I really ought to post the pics I have of the one that "visited" me inside my garage. It was a riot. It is still alive by the way.
Make you a deal, if I were to get a skunk, and you drove up here in your moms van to get it, I would trade you a lion hunt in Jacks Canyon. PM me if interested! There is a kitty back there now that I don't want to chase alone! LOL! Have been following your posts for quite a while and wanted to talk to you anyway.
Regards,
Bill

As long as I don't have to go to San Antonio and pick up my mom's van, you're on. One of the boys tattled on me last time and she was NOT happy about having a skunk in her vehicle, even without it getting sprayed, LOL.
