I guess lures could be considered baiting in some states. Lures are meant to attract critters bait is for consumption. Be that as it may, I find a sense of security in Bear country having my sound away from me as well as scent away from me. 15-20 yards is the average at night, 40 to 50 during the day is normal for me.
at that short of a distance you will see eyes. More times than not, once I see a predator I will work him in with a lip squeak anyway.
To me keeping a bears attention until I feel that I am at a safe distance means a lot to me. I would then shut the caller off and he can keep the lure.
