calling bear POWI

Haven't called them, so can't help there. You will probably have your best luck hunting the beaches or clear cuts. It will all be spot and stalk. They might come to a call. It would be worth a try.

Thanks for info I think I will try various deer distress calls. I hunt with traditional bows so this will be a big challenge

T Harris, I have called several bears over the years in the west but I will give you some advise for what it is worth. If you are going to call bears to the bow, I would highly reccommend a back up with a gun or bear repellant. I have called in several to the gun and shot them so I decided to try it with a bow. First bear I killed no problem called the bear to about 40 yards stopped calling, he circled down wind. Shot took out both lungs and he ran off. The next spring decided to try it again with my recurve. Spotted a bear, hit the call bear bee-lines for me. I stopped calling at about 35 yards, bear keeps comming. He sees me at about 8 yards and locks up facing me. All the hair stands up on him, he goes to woowfing and bouncing on his front legs. I have a bow in hand and a 44 mag on my hip, what to do? I am afraid to move as this might cause him to attack. I am sitting on the ground with my back against a tree so any movement other than to shoot my bow is going to take some effort. He finally turns slightly quarteering and I shoot. I drop my bow and try to get to my pistol. I don't think I had my hand on the gun before the bear went by me at about 2 yards. He went about 80 yards and piled up. Anyway what I am trying to get at is I really think it is a good idea to have a little help if things go bad. If that bear had wanted me he would have been on me long before I could have gotten to my gun or bear repelant. Still occasionally try to call bears but if I am alone I pack the rifle. Good luck on your hunt.

Scott.

Thanks for the info Scott. My buddy and I are going to team up.I am interested in knowing what call you used. This is my third trip to POWI there are alot of deer but I am not sure about the small game I have never seen a rabbit there.

My advice is to use your first day to find a good spot for baiting, and LAY SOME BAIT!! Then go elsewhere for a few days calling, glassing, etc.

If you don't get what you want in a few days, check & refresh your bait.

If you still don't get what you want calling, glassing, boating, etc, you still have an active, seasoned bait station for a last gasp attempt.

T Harris, I just use any raspy open reed call and screem loud and proud. I have probaly called most of my bears with a critter call standard. Just use the same calling sequence I use for coyotes except try to call as constant as my lungs will allow and still be able to shoot.
I have had the best luck with spring bears spotting them first then slipping within 100 yards, setting up and then just scream at them as loud as you can with the call. They will usually charge hard right at you and most of the time when you stop calling they will slow down or stop and circle down wind so make sure you have open shooting lanes on your down wind side. Good luck on your hunt.

Scott
