Calling bears?

Anyone having experiences in calling bears? Here in Sweden we only have brown bears and I´m interested in trying to call them.

The calling of red foxes was totaly unknown here before Articfox started with open reed calls from US and it have proven to be very effective here. It might be the same with the bears and someone have to be the first to try /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif What kind of calls/sounds should I use? Have had great succes on red foxes with my Cronk Killer Call. Please, what kind of equipment should I order? The bear season opens at 21 of august.

I've read a good bit about calling bears, but it was all about calling black bears. From what I've read, for black bears fawn bawls, loud raspy jack rabbit, and cub bawls are the sounds to use. Sounds like they're much like cats in calling for them. You need to call continuously. I've never read anything pertaining to browns. I would venture to guess distress sounds of your deer or elk (not sure what you've got over there) would be the place to start. If your browns are anything like the North American Brown, they pose the potential to be much more aggressive than the blacks. Would definitely consider someone watching your back. Maybe some of the fellas from further north can shed some more illumination on this than I can, but would be interested to hear about your results.

Last winter I had two black bears on on differant hunts come in on me while I was howling on the Red Desert Howler. I was calling in the woods and I guess they dont like coyote`s. On one farm that I hunt, a grouchy old bear growls, every time I use the howler. On another hunt a skunk came after me while I was howling. Man must not be the only creatour that does not like coyote`s.

We have only moose and reindeer in the area I hunt bears. I hunt in vast mountain areas with good sight and will probably have my dogs with me so just to get a glimpse of the bear would help the hunt tremendosly. It´s a lot of reindeers in the area and the reindeer herders don´t want us to release the dogs untill we se a bear. If calling could get the bear moving in daylight and make it possible to get the dogs on the right track the possibility for succes is good. Our browns seems a bit nicer than yours, just one killed hunter for the past hundred years.

No Coyotes in Sweden and almost no wolves either so the howling is probably not the way to succes.

Sent you a PM. A search of the archives should turn up some bear calling info. I've called a dozen or so and a couple of grizzlies, all on purpose. Plus have had one grizzly and another time a black bear come to a shot when I killed a deer, unplanned calling.

I've used mostly a raspy jack rabbit voice in an old Weems All Call, that sounds a lot like a spotted mule deer fawn, or small bear cub crying for that matter. It is very similar to a European hare I heard. I think they will come to almost any sound that approximately immitates a small animal in distress. I have called all of mine by calling for 20 seconds or so with a minute or so of silence, but others have had better luck by calling constantly.

Called a black bear up close with a lip squeak when I didn't have a call along.

You can do this. Go for it!
 
I can't recommend any sounds, but I've heard you're supposed to call continuously. They supposedly lose interest quite quickly, unlike most other predators.
 
I tried calling bare in Alaska but got so cold I had to return to camp and put some clothes on. Many here have given good advice on bear calling. In my opinion, remember this one important rule: Be absolutely sure you want a grizzly to respond before you blow.
 
Thank you all for good advice, specially Okanagan for detailed info. I have now ordered the Calling bears with Wayne Carleton and a Primos Bear Call as a supplement to normal distress calls. I will give this a serious try and will report any succes.
