also being the cheapo i am how do i make a crow
decoy?
thanks

savge man, i have hunted crows few several years in southern ky. i have yet to get them to land for a shot.they seem to realize decoys are fake within a few feet of them.and all the sounds i use to attract them are generaly fight sounds.if you insist on using a .22 i would suggest roosting them.find were the roost and if you are stealthy enough you should be able to get within 50 yards or less.try to get there before light or find a common roost and you can be there waiting for them in the evening.hope that helps. happy hunting.

I just read an article where a guy poured ketchup on and around a deer kill in the snow to draw em in.
Same guy used one of those lawn ornement looking crows that hangs from a peice of fishing line and as it bounces up and down the wings go up and down.

E-callers are the recipe for crows in my opinion Savage_man. You need to be as far as possible from the site and obviously camo'ed up.
They got a helluva view from up there when their on their way in, think about it.

If you shoot the roost they will eventually move the roost ruining it for other hunter who actually want to hunt an ethical way. If you want to use a 22 you either must find a feild they are feeding in and setup on them that way. or get a hand call and give the come here call a few time they will land with your decoys but only breifly. the fun and frolic call will also get them to land with dekes. these are both confidence call that are not threatening to them. if you want to make your own decoys jaut get a stiff peice of cardboard and cut out a bird shape spray paint it black and pin it to the ground with a sharp dowell rod. that it.

You can't force a crow to land on the ground. They like to land in open fields, but do so on their own. I've been hunting them for 40 years, and seldom can get one to land when/where I want it to. A single upright decoy in a bare field w/o much calling works sometimes. They do land quite often at a corn feeder here in TX. If it's not illegal to bait, you might try that approach.

I haven't hunted crow all that much. IMHO, I have been able to get 7 over a weeks time with just putting out cracked corn. I'm using a 22 and a blind, the cover over my patio.

I've wounded one by mistake and found that another will come in to see what happened and shot that one good, waited and another came by, got that one and then finished off the first one.

They wise up fast and for hunting one spot I would think you'ld have to keep changing tactics.

I put wings on a store bought decoy and never had one come in to it on the back fence. It was the corn.

Good hunt'n to Ya,

Crows are on the PROTECTED list in TX. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Unless they're causing, or about to cause damage. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think your best bet would be to get your self a dead rabbit, do what ever with the meat cook it or something, take the hide and some ketchup, go before light, put your decoy/bait out about 50 yards from where u are, site and call, alos put a few crow decoys out, if u have any plywood or something thin laying around cut it in the shap a crow would look like if u where looking down on it, it has worked for me in the past....

World's easiest 3-D crow decoy:

Get a paper plate. Spray paint it black. Fold it in half without creasing the fold. Staple the end shut with one staple. Get a popsicle stick (or something similar) and staple the plate to the stick. Angle the plate so it looks like a crow standing. Shove the stick into the dirt.

Crows are EVIL! Kill them with extreme prejudice! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Corn works real well. They can see it a mile away. They must land to eat it but be careful of their sentry that will come in to spy.

I hunt with a 10-22 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

i like the paper plate trick, i also cut black plastic trash bags into triangles , and put them on wire coat hangers, i also use a chunck of red cloth and stake crows around it.we have landed several, also make a smaller version of a goose flag.
