Calling fox with fox and/or pup sounds????

I have heard people say this works great but I have been fox hunting seriously now for about four years and never not one time during hunting season have I had a fox, red or gray respond at all to the various sounds of another fox. Cant even get an eye. Puppies, adults, growls, barks, whines, the various distress noises, even the ones with a rabbit and fox both squealing. I have an e-caller with remote and all sorts of calls on it but only get a response from the basic cottontail distress. I could delete all the sounds but the rabbit and it wouldn't hurt my hunting at all. Using night vision and shine no lights and we have plenty of fox...killed 6 Friday night. What am I doing wrong if the fox sounds are supposed to work so good??? Have heard alot guys around here say just the opposite...they only see fox with a red fox pup distress. Only once did I see a fox with a foxlike noise, it was daytime three years ago in the early summer and a half assed bark brought two red pups back out into the open. Must be something I am doing, a few of the guys that use fox sounds are credible.

It is not as effective on Reds as it is on Grays. I too have never had success with it on Red Fox.

But there is nothing to compare to it when calling Gray Fox.I have seen them comeback to it after being shot at and missed. They cannot resist the Johnny Stewart Gray Fox Pup Distress sound, if they hear they will come. I am not endorsing the mixutre of fight sounds or mixture of rabbit and fox sounds, just simply the Gray Fox Pup in Distress for Grays.

I live about an hour from you , maybe an hour and 15 minutes...southern Maryland. We have mostly grays here too, I usually kill 20 grays to one red. I know the sound you are talking about, I recorded it on my computer from a cassette when I went to an MP3 caller just to put it on there and try it with the remote but it hasn't worked yet. Aint tried it in a while either. I will next time out. We mostly get on the edge of fields near thick or swampy woods and place the caller about 100 ft away out in the clear open field. Are you in the woods or out in a field???

The JS grey fox in distress has killed so many fox in my life I can not count. If a grey fox can hear the sound I am convinced it will come. I have had multiple kills around the truck at night with that sound. I have had next to nothing else respond to the sound but for greys it is my go to sound. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This is my point....and please dont get me wrong, I have heard this before from several other guys and I absolutely do believe what you guys are saying...It just seems to all add up to the fact that I must be doing something wrong. There is a navy base nearby that we hunt which is full of gray fox. Nobody else has hunted them in many years and nobody for [beeep] sure has trapped in decades there. To say the place is overpopulated is not doing the situation justice. In the rest of the county there is a very healthy population and its not unusual to see as many as ten a nite or one at every turnout{at least the way we hunt.} You would think we would have called up at least one with the fox noises??? My hunting buddy and I were talking about getting a new e-caller and the Foxpro FX5 holding all those sounds and then he said "what ta hell for, all we ever use is one or two and both them are rabbits?" Hate to spend $700.00 to get a remote that lights up and 198 sounds we will never use!!

Get a cheap tape player or CD player and plug in a speaker. Use a Johnny Stewart Grey Fox pup in distress(no other brand) I have no interest or ties to the JS company, it just works. Hunt at night and scan with a red lens spotlight. Shoot fox, go home have a drink and write us a report. It is that simple. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

i hunt greyfox alot and i use the greyfox pup as a two pronged attack. sometimes the coyotes will open up at the sound and then i will throw in some bunny blues and let the grey fox play and the coyotes will usually come in.Last year i started huntin with a guy just gettin into it , was playin greyfox pup and the coyotes started in howlin and yippin, up on the ridge, then dead silence so i knew they would come, turned his foxpro onto rodent distress , with in 3 minuts , 3 coyotes popped out of the swamp and he had his first shot at a coyote.Im freinds with a good trapper and he has greyfox killed in his legholds, usually bitten in the back of the head and neck done by coyotes.the coyotes hate greyfox and dont tolerate them in their area hunting rabbits and mice the way i see it.if im huntin with a friend i usually set him up down wind .he will get more shots at the yotes and i kill the greys that come straight to the sound.soon i will have a caller with a remote.i hope this helps someone . it does work but is not some secret or magic pill. Always think wind and setup first and good things can happen.good huntin all.

JD,
This year has been my best with calling yotes with the grey fox sounds.... I have had many, many nights when they would start howling... I have tried different ways to answer them. Some work, some don't, but i know they are there.... been busted several nights as well when the wind was not good for our setup... this was mainly the first part of the season when we were never expecting a yote to respond.

The grey fox pup distress is the best sound I have ever used as far as greys are concerned. Nothing beats it in my experience. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have greay fox sounds on my FoxPro but I'm sure it is not the Johnny Stewart sound. Where can I hear the exact Johnny Stewart gray fox pup sound you guys are talking about on the computer???? Would really like to hear it to see if it sounds like mine/
Thanks petejc

in my opinion the greyfox sounds for foxpro are not even close to a dennis kirk or johhny stewart sound, but i think with an fx3 you can load them, this will be my next caller.I use a western river tape player , plenty loud and clear , with great responses , i wish it had a remote.
Yotehunter74 , yes it is a great call , sounds like you are doing well, another great sound is coon puppies, and another great change up is coon and greyfox fight. Good luck.

I just downloaded the JS fox distress from western rivers. When I download that onto my Scorpion, will it "loop" automatically? If not, (I'm not a computer geek...) is there some program that might be on my computer that I can use to loop the JS sound bite before I put it on my Scorpion?

msinc,
If you killed 6 fox friday night your not doing too much wrong. But I have to agree that the grayfox distress sounds and especially the JS and one from Western Rivers are really killer. I really like to start with a prey sound and switch over. I like to switch after we have shot and use it to bring a spooked fox back or another in. I never though that a gray fox distress would work on reds but missed a red last week switched to gray fox distress and the red came back at a dead run. I cannot explain why you are not having success with this sound but I would suggest you try this if you haven't already. Use it just after you shoot. If you kill or miss dosen't matter just keep it running a while and see if you bring in another.

Good luck

Rocky

Not tryin' to split hairs here but I have a Western Rivers Predation MP3 caller and am very familiar with their website and downloads. I dont see anything to connect the WR sounds to Johnny Stewart. I have had about ten people all say the same thing in the last week or so..."you gotta get the Johnny Stewart grey fox distress, that's the only one that will work!!" Then some guy post a link to the Western Rivers download page???? How do you know they are the same if they even are???? Nothing on the site says that??? Also, there are two different grey fox distress downloads which one or both???

I have the JS gray fox (from their CD) and the downloaded WR gray fox on my MP3. They are not even close to the same. JS kicks A$$, any gray within earshot will come running, full bore.

As for reds, distress calls will work, I have not much luck using red fox vocalizations from various sources.

MSINC, are you sure you got a "good" recording from your cassette?

I have to give another vote for the JS Grey Fox pup in distress sound. It has killed a ton of greys for me. A double on my first stand ever calling many years back. So how would a person get this sound for an FX5. I have never tried another so now you guys have me scared. Just got a new FX5, I would rather not be without Johnny Stewart sound if possible.

Last week was our first five night stands this year and the only fox we called responded to FOXPROS grey fox pup I. Last call of the last set Then I missed him /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
