Calling predators with a duck call

Yeah, I know it sounds funny but try this.

If you have a single reed duck call, pull it apart and use it like an open read distress call.

By varying the angle and pressure I can get some pretty nasty sounds out off all my duck calls. It's pretty funny too.

Fine idea and never thought about that before.
The coyotes and bobcats here both enjoy a duck dinner
from time to time.

Well, if you take it apart and use it like an open reed it sounds more like a dying rabbit than a duck.

When I'm turning inserts, if I can't get one to tune up properly, I make it into a distress call. They've worked fine for me....

Sobering thought that all the money spent on distress calls and we're just buying factory rejects from the duck call factory :-D

i made one out of a olt model perfect duck call in the 70's,worked great i could howl and make distress calls . i wnet to buy another one and they did not make them any more

An old government trapper showed me that trick years ago, take an Olt D-2 duck call and pull the barrel off.Makes a great open reed coyote call.

I've done this a lot, so much that I thought everyone knew about it.

Its often fn when sitting in the lay out blinds and no geese are flying to call a coyote into the decoys. I'm guessing they hang around the large flocks of geese picking off cripples, which is why calling in this situation can be so successfull.

You know, I almost always see a coyote when goose hunting. You might be one to something. But, here it's illegal to posses lead shot while waterfowl hunting. So it would have to be steel BB or T shot.
