Calling Rock Chucks??

We caught a young one once in Yellowstone as it ran past us and picked it up by the back legs. It started making racket and every rock chuck on the hill stood up to see what was going on. I'd say the right sound would work very well, but I don't know where you could find it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Thinking about it..... Twice I've heard rockchucks make a squalling noise after being shot. Sounded like a dying rabbit. One of those times it was a young chuck I'd shot off a log. A bunch of others came around to investigate.

I have had some gun shy chucks. I have had pretty good success just whistling kind of like........oh wait no sound. I just let out a sharp whistle every couple minutes then take off their heads. Doesn't always work, after a while they kinda see the bigger picture. Then you may have go with the good camo, show up before they come out to sun themselves and shoot a few each day til you get them all.

The chucks at my house are not gun shy... They sometimes will stand up after someone shoots and misses... but they are TRUCK and Squeeky BRAKE shy!! I have been busted a few times now!

Darn it....I thought I was the only one who used the Audubon Bird call for coaxing coyotes & other varmints.
They work on p-dogs also....:)

Now another calling secret is out.

We have alot of rockchucks in the fields around Springville where I grew up. I have shot those suckers with everything from 30-06 to my trusty longbow. The best success we have had is to get set up early or middle of the day when there in there burrow. Get a pop up camo blind and use a bow of any sort... recurve or compound. The bow is pretty much silent and your shooting close out of the blind. My friend Riley did this a few times and was able to really decimate the population. I have used my 17 hmr from a good distance and they don't seem to hear it like a centerfire. I have taken up to 10 chucks out of one field doing this. My shots were 100-200 yards and I was camoed up along a fenceline.
