Calling sequence suggestions for bear?

I will be bear calling this season (AUG 1) and would like to know how the experienced callers would start out. I have a Wayne Carlton bear call and I just ordered JS cub bawling and distressed white tail fawn tapes. I thought the tapes might be easier to deal with at first. How long should I call before stopping, then starting again? or should I run tape continuosly? Will be hunting west side of Wa state.

Patncor,
What i do is play the tape LOUD and let er run for the full 1/2 hour or whatever your tape is. I stay for a minimum of a 1/2 hour per stand and longer in good bear country,when you stop calling the bear will stop running. Out of all the bears i've called in and seen only one has snuck in on me the others sounded as tho they were horses running through the woods,i do turn the volume down once the bear is spotted. You might want to consider a decoy also,the fearless fawn by feather flex is a awesome decoy. i'm going to be picking up their bedded doe decoy to use this fall as well and i think that will also work great. As far as the mouth calls go use the same routine as with the e-caller just keep and eye open when calling /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif i would use a fawn bawl type sound like a looooooong drawn out Waaaaaaaaaaa Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa instead of the sound that Wayne Carlton uses on his video. good luck,

I start with a low volume, whether I'm using a mouth call or tape. Decoys are a great addition. I call NON-STOP for a minimum of 1 hour, normally if it's a smoking hot bear area I call for 1 and 1/2 hours. If you only call for 30 minutes you will miss several bears. I slowly increase the volume till I'm going full bore. I would say 8 of the 12 I have called in snuck in. My experience is smaller bears sneak in and the larger the bear the more noise, as I think they sometimes are trying to intimidate whatever is eating the animal in distress. This is not a hard and fast rule as the biggest bear I have taken was standing there looking at me from 15 yards before I ever knew he was there. Good luck and keep us posted. All of my favorite bear areas in Northeast WA don't open until 3 Sep. Talk to you later. Fred

Patncor were in washington are you from im in olympia area i will be in the clearwater area lots of bears and cougars i will be using bearcub in distress deer tapes handcalls i will be using the new burnhams double reed jackrabbit call johnny stewart pc7 wich i called my first bear in three yrs ago i cant wait im pump good luck Rick

Im over in Snohomish west of Everett. I understand the bears are doing quite well over here since the hounds and bait got struck down.
I think stalking and calling make bear hunting alot more interesting.

patncor you should have some good bear hunting up that way im heading up to clearwater after work to do some calling for bears cougars good luck hunting Rick

For calling you might want to try "Wow, look at all the goodies in this picknick basket!" interspersed with "Wow these jelly filled donuts taste good!"

You also might want to try recording and playing back the sounds of a can of Pringles being opened and eaten.

Well Ive only been out ounce so far to scout an area and try out the E-caller. The walkman type cassette player let me down, its a Sports by GPX with auto reverse and it got hung up and kept reversing. I saw bear sign well enough to fill a couple of pie crusts anyway. Im looking forward to getting out again soon so I can try out the new bawling cub and distressed fawn tapes. will keep you all posted.

patncor;
The only bear I have clled in was last year with a sceery rabbit distress call. Just this last winter I was able to pick up the bear cub distress. I was going to try it opening morning, but my favorite clear cut all ready had a beutiful black in it. Needless to say my first tag is still open. I'm down in the Vancouver area. And so far it looks as if we are going to have a great season. Allot of my hunting buddies have seen well over 5 this year all ready. I on the othe hand have been out 3 times and only have seen 1. Oh well, good things come to those who wait. Good luck and let me know how the cub tape works. I'm going to give mine a try tomorrow morning.

Timberking: You had posted in another message that you had deer in distress and a the sound of a bear taking down a deer. Would it be possible to send me those sounds. Have you tried sending them as an email attachment or do they need to go via snail mail? You can email me at Pomoxis_or@yahoo.com

Pomoxis,
I'd be happy to send you the sounds. I'll try sending them e-mail let me know if you get them or not if not we'll work something else out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Well last weekend was my first time tyring to call bear with an electic caller. I have called them in 1 time before with a sceery rabbit call. This weekend I tryed the bear cub distress and the fawn distress. I have been using the electric call for one year and have failed to call anything in but 1 coyote last fall. I'm using a sony walkman with a amplifier from a radio shack speaker and a phantom speaker. Just wondering if maybe I can't get it loud enough. Any insight I could get from you guys would be great. Thanx....
