I got to thinking last night that so far this year I've lucked into two cow horns that had especially unique color hiding under the nasty outter shell. People need to understand alot of effort goes into working with raw horn and sometimes it takes alot of elbow grease to get to the prize under the shell. These are both few and far between as far as unique patterning and color. I'm hoping that I haven't used up my horn karma for the year on these two. It's almost like panning for gold and finding a nugget when you get past the shell and the colors/patterns start to really show. Callmakers and handcallers, post up some of your favorite polished cow horn pics if you wouldnt mind, I'm sure we'd all like to have a look-see.

Cool thread Thomas. I get giddy over cool colored horns. I've still got quite a few in the shop that I set aside for rainy days. Alot of these past photos brought back some memories. I remember building each and every one of them.

Tony, seeing those makes me want to "get sick" and go home and work in the Trashcave instead of here at the salt mine!! Beauty's!! Those are all great! I can't wait till I can get the natural toneboards down as good as yours look. I went back and came up with a couple more.

Scott, that Cronk is wicked!! Not only is it colored for miles, it is a signature Cronk!! That's awesome!! Is the flame one from Mr. Holzer? It looks like his work. Both of those are exellent examples of hard work that goes into horn calls. Oh, doesn't matter who you are, post your prettiest horn calls, It's hump day and I'm needing some inspration for this weekend in the Trashcave!! Good job Scott!!

Scott, that Cronk howler has to be sporting one of the prettiest horns I've ever seen. Nice catch on that one! The flame howler definately came from Brad's shop. Signature look!

Here is my Silver Dog Wolf Pack Howler. It has some great colors in it. I have to add that his Wolf Pack Howler has worked for me in getting responses from our Montana Wolves.

Good looking horns. I'd like to find a couple hundred like the one you found at the antique sale. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif That wolf howler looks like nature painted it with water colors. Very cool.

I must admit (and I'm sure other call builder's are the same way), I never look at longhorn cows the same way, when I see them. I don't know how many times I said "there's an awesome pair of howler's right there!". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I agree with you about those vintage cowhorn tips, I find them all the time but in this particular case the guy sold it to me for 3.00 the others I look at all start at 35.00 and HIGHER! Funny thing you say you look at horns differently, I keep thinking of BOSS HOG's car in the Dukes of Hazzard and how those horns on his car would make a great pair of howlers. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
Fireball, I love that pied piper!! That is one heck of a find. I have an old Cronk that came with a pill bottle with extra reeds and a cassette tape with Rich doing the instructions on it.

The Pied Piper cow horn call also has the original tube mailer with a 6 cent postage stamp and 1954 Christmas Holiday Stamp as well.
 
I haven't made very many, but I like the top horn in this picture.

Most of my horns have turned out to be rather plain. I'll probably make what I call truck horns out of them.


*Oh, I need to learn how to take pictures. All three of those horns are polished to a deep shine.
