Hey everyone, this is my first post and what I have seen so far this is a great forum, and it is aweasome they have a Eastern coyote forum. My question is has anyone ever used Carlsons Dead Coyote Chokes or Hevi Dead Coyote Loads? I have read online reviews that claim that you can reach out to 70 yards or more with this combo, but that seems more like a dream than reality.

I have tried and tested the Carlson's Dead Coyote choke with both the Hevi loads, and the new Federal Premium Heavyweight Coyote loads.

I think the 70 yard mark is pretty much the killing limit. I know I wouldn't shoot one past that. if you do, you are hoping for a "Magic Pellet" to find a mark.

If you are using them within normal coyote shotgun range, say...out to 60 yards, you would be good to go.

where abouts in Orange are you ? I'm out of Rock Tavern washingtonville area .

I use the dead coyote with the choke . as far as the killing power it's a serious load I've made pass throughs at 50+ yds . but the claims of super tight patterns at far ranges I haven't seen . for my set-ups rem super mag 3.5 and 11-87 3inch both using dead coyote anything in 50yds shouldn't go anywhere . I will take a shot out to sixty expecting follow up shots to anchor them. I think 70yds would be all of luck .
 
I am right in between Middletown and Montgomery. Thanks for the info, I was thinking that 50 yards would be a safe distance. I can't wait to try one of these loads on a coyote this year, I have heard they are pretty serious. But they better be for the price, they are about .50 cents more expensive a round than the sabot slugs I use for deer!!
 
Yup ,They're big money . but they do get the job done . another good load is remington HD BB . and alot of people on here use federal buck #4 .
 
Welcome aboard, I use the tube and coyote shot in my 835 and you'll be amazed by the knock down it has. All I can muster is about 50 yards and then my pattern opens up to much, every gun will be differant + 1 what swamp said.
 
I shoot Carlson's Dead Coyote Choke and also use the Dead Coyote T shot. I limit my shots to inside 50 yards. I get the same performance/pattern however shooting #4 buck out of my Rhino Choke in my Mossberg 835.
 
Carlson makes a decent product and are good people to work with if needed. I haven't seen the same premium performance from the "Dead Coyote" choke as I have some other brands of choke like Indian Creek Black Diamond Strike, Kick's Gobblin' Thunder, Pure Gold, and Jelly Head chokes. And 70+ yard kills CONSISTENTLY from a 12 gauge 3” gun, choke, and load combinations is a real stretch. I’m not knocking the Carlson product, but the claim of consistent 70+ yard kills is highly questionable.
 
12 3 1/2 Kicks High Flyer with Remington HD TT or Remington 3 in #4 buck. You will be good out too 70 yards with either of these loads, but I wouldn't push that. Every gun is different though. My one 3 1/2 shoots good enough to kill umm at 70 in front of the dog, but the other prob only 55.

I'm on the same page as GC...70 yards is just plain silly. 50 is possible, but not with the Carlson Dead Coyote choke and Dead Coyote Ts for a combination...out of my shotgun. I have a Mossberg 500 Turkey Special with a 3" chamber and a 20" barrel. I patterned this choke/ammo and would NOT trust it past 30 yards.

I can get 100% pattern with 3" Federal Premium 00 buck inside a 30" circle with a Patternmaster choke tube, at 40 yards. I intend to pattern some #4 buck, as soon as I can find some and see how it performs. I'd like to have a few more pellets in the pattern, but if a coyote gets hit with 00 buck inside 50 yards, I'm thinking it's going to ruin his day.

One thing is for certain... Shotguns, choke tubes, barrel lengths and ammo provide some wide variables.

It seems like a lot of people here use shotguns on yotes, is that a norm or preference and if it is a preference, would an old fashion 5.56 NATO round (.223 rem) be a bad choice?
I don't own a scatter-gun yet, was looking at the new Benelli DaVinci but they are ridiculously priced at about $1500.
Anyway, I have AR-15 as my main predator rifle, is the shotgun a better choice? Providing that I haven't shot a single yote yet (heck I haven't even spot one yet in the woods) I'm no authority on questioning the firearms used, just trying to get your opinion on what is best to use.

The reason I use a shotgun on yotes is, where I hunt it is real thick brush and really heavy wooded areas. I can't see the yote until it is basically right on top of me in the thick brush.

And Bowhunter thanks for the info, I shoot a Mossberg 500 with a 24 inch barrel, I sure hope I just didn't spend all that money on those stupid Dead Coyote loads for nothing. I am way to cheap to pattern those rounds at over $3.50 a pop. So I guess I will just take them out to the field and make sure I don't shoot passed 40 yards.

Hey everybody. I'm new on here and this is my first post. Love the site, love the hunting in the east section. Been hunting yotes for a few years now. Probably hunted 8 mos. or 30 stands before calling and killing my first one. So if your new to predator hunting don't give up, you learn a little every time.

I too have been wandering about the carlson chokes and dead dog chokes. Just recently started totin' a shotgun along after gettin' a few in my lap. I shoot an 11-87 super mag, with 3.5 in. dead coyote loads. don't know what brand choke, it was in it when i bought it. it's a .675 constriction turkey choke. So far I've shot a grey fox (60 yds) a nice black coyote (54 yds) and a coyote that was running at 80+. FYI on the 80 yd shot after finding it 300 yds away in an adjoining field an autopsy revealed 3 pellets hit it out of two shots. SW said over 70 was luck, I beg to differ. 0ver 70 and landing a pellet in the liver, one in the lungs, and one in an artery in the neck was luck.lol So far i love the dead coyote loads just don't know if i could ask a whole lot more of ANY choke.

Don't mean a thing unless you pattern your gun. Last weekend a friend called and said he had trouble hitting anything with his new Winchester SX3. My son has one of these and they are fine shotguns so I was a little surprised he was having troubles. Anyway, we took this fellers gun out to pattern it and long story short at 13 yards he was 7" high and at 40 yards his patterns centered a full 24" above point of aim. Many people cannot believe how finicky a shotgun, choke, and load combination can be. Not patterning a shotgun, choke, and load is like mounting a new scope on a deer rifle and going hunting without sighting in. Just doesn’t make good sense in the end…
 
Since I'm brand new here my opnion might not mean a lot but I've been huntin a few years with an AR in .223 w/Hornady 55 gr.v-max's and don't plan on changing anytime soon.
 
Right you are GC, that doesn't make alot of sence if I do that. Guess I will go pattern it out with a couple different loads see which one shoots the best out of that choke.
