The thread about the game checks got reminded me of something crazy that happened to me 5-6 years ago.
I used to lease a tract of land a few miles from my house. The property butted up to some houses and had a few county dirt roads nearby. Here in SC if you live in the country you have some sort of ATV, that's just life here. So needless to say with the houses and dirt roads near by I'd get my share of people riding through my property. To be honest as long as it wasn't during deer season and they didn't tear up my roads I didn't really mind. However, we know that there's always that few bad apples who ruin it for everyone else so I was known around that part to be pretty strict about trespassing.
This young black man (yes, race is important, you will see why) lived near by and jogged down the road about every evening. Well one day a deputy came to my house and asked me if I could come with him and show him around the property. I asked why and he explained that supposedly the young man was out on his daily jog and two white men stopped and tried to force him into their vehicle. The young man took off running through my gate and down my road. The men went in after him, shooting at him as he ran away. The young man jumped into a briar patch and hid for a few hours. Whenever he felt safe he came out and finally found his way out of the other end of the property. He was cut up and bloody from the briars.
They asked if I had any cameras out that may have caught anything and I told them that I did have one on the road that should have caught everything. I took them to the camera and the SD card was gone. Another deputy spoke up and said "yeah, that must be the SD card the man's family gave us". He then explained that before they called the cops "the family" went to look for the young man and seen the camera and removed the SD card to see if anything was on it. All of this smelled pretty fishy to me because as I told the deputy whenever we were walking around I only seen one set of foot prints going in and none coming back out. The deputy asked if he could take the SD card to the office and DL the pictures. I told him yes.
Well this story made the news and everything. A few months go by and still no one arrested. I contact the Sheriff's dept and ask about the case and was then told that there should be a press release coming out any day and that they could tell me more afterwards. A few days later it was on the news that the man lied and none of it ever happened. I was curious to what went down so I called again and was told that they would tell me whenever I came to pick up my SD card. So a few days later I went to the office and the detective procedded to tell me that the man was on his daily jog and decided to go around my gate and job down my road. He seen my camera and got scared that I would call the cops on him so he made up the entire story.
Anyone else got any crazy scouting camera stories?
Oh yeah... I forgot to mention. The only pictures (other than animals) was the man going by the camera alone then his family coming to look for him.
