camouflage

Hi,
I am wondering if camouflage is a necessary item to wear while calling coyotes. I do try to sit with my back to a tree and I remain very still while calling. I call for about 10 -15 minutes.
I have been practicing with my Crit'Rcall PeeWee and I have not had much luck. In fact I have had no luck. I am not hunting them I just want to see if I can call them. I have compared my sounds of a dying rabbit to those sounds I have found at various sites and I seem to have it right.
Thank you,

Dusty

I wear camo most of the time but I do not think it is as important as holding still and paying attention to the setup. Just this weekend I called in a group of 5 coyotes. There were three of us. And we did end up with dead coyotes. We hadn't really planned on going so we only had camo jackets, blue jeans, and dull colored gloves and hats. Given a choice though I'd always wear camo, however, I think your chances are still good with dull, natural colors.

It gives me confidence, which is a big factor in my book. I don't, however, think it's a "must have". If you look at some of the pics from the "old days" of those championship callers that racked up huge numbers of predators, most of them have on a cowboy hat and a darker colored shirt with a plaid pattern on it. I think camo has gone overboard these days (and hunters like myself have gone along with it.)

Being quiet and still, breaking up your outline, playing the wind right and overall stand location are the most important in my book.

Take it easy,

Rusty

I think Rusty Holt has hit it right on the head. I'm sure you can call coyotes without camo clothing on, but any advantage you can get against these cunning predators should be taken. I wear camo most of the time, but have taken coyotes while wearing blue jeans and insulated underwear jacket.

I will have to add here too, that I was laying in the shade when I called in this coyote and that was certainly in my favor.

The other points Rusty makes:

Being quiet and still, breaking up your outline, playing the wind right and overall stand location are the most important in my book.
are right on the money--more important than camo any day of the week.

No you don't need camo to successfully call coyotes. I have called far to many coyotes wearing a red plaid wool jacket to think camo is a must.

Camo sure can't hurt anything and I do wear it much of the time. Wearing dull drab colors can do the same thing as full blown camo. But if camo turns your crank by all means wear it.

Rusty nailed it on his description of what makes a successful stand. The only thing I might add is getting to your stand undetected. I think many stands are blown before a guy ever sits down.

And oh yeah, there must be coyotes around to hear your call's to call any in. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I also agree with what Rusty and SilverFox. Camo is very effetive, but it is possabile to call in a yote without it. For me I use Camo I personally find it very effective. The biggest thing is make sure of your set up if you set up is bad your chances are slim in getting a coyote in. There are three thing a yote has going for him sight, smell, hearing, you have to beat those in order get one to a call. Make sure the wind is right get in without being seen and be very quiet. Good luck

If you're not camo'ed up well, you're gonna have one heck of a time getting a coyote to come in close. My last kill was at 13 steps on a coyote that had no clue I was even there. Dogs are mostly color blind anyways, so the point is to disguise yourself and you don't really need camo for that. But it obviously works very well.

For those folks who pride themselves in NOT wearing camo, masks, etc, what's your average kill distance? I bet it's longer than those who DO wear camo.

Find whatever works for you. I think camo is fun to wear!

No you don’t need camouflage at all. I wear it some times but the last 5 or 6 years I just wear my carhartt work jacket.

Camo can only help you but if you are not seeing any coyotes it is not because you are not camoed up or because you are using the wrong call. (The Pee Wee is all I use.) Keep trying and you will succeed. Persistance pays

Good hunting.

Q,

i belive camo is a great way to go !i have been wearing camo and killed yotes at 15 yds in broad daylight ,, some closer!! the only thing is i was sitting in the hatch of a truck at the time.. i have seen fox standing on the tires looking at the speaker in broad daylite and sitting in that red and black plaid jacket on a hill with no cover and have them come all the way in!! also have had them stop at a long ways out and spook when i moved in full camo in the brush!! they are all different and that is what makes what we do fun and exciting.. great to talk about but they are all not going to act the same !! gotta love em!! grandpa fudge /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks to all of you for the great advice. I will keep trying to call them in. I think persistence is very important in this game and that there must be coyotes in the area to hear the call. I am after wildlife pictures only since I have not hunted in years.

Thanks,

Dusty

Basilmarvin,
I noticed that there's no replies from hunters east of the Mississippi. Coyotes in the east are smarter due to their greater exposure to humans. That exposure won't allow you as many mistakes, simply because most coyotes have seen humans before, been called before, shot at before, etc.

I prefer camo from head to toe, when hunting the hunters and I won't leave home without it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I'd rather guess that I was winded or heard as opposed to being seen. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif Ofcourse, eliminating all the chances of being spotted first is difficult, but that's why it's called hunting and not getting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Good hunting, Bowhunter57

After looking at the pic in Silverfox's post, I must add that having a rifle like the one shown in the picture is a "must have" to kill coyotes. At least that is what I'm gonna tell my wife. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Awesome rig you've got there Silverfox....thanks for the pic!

Rusty

Cammo is one of those things that if you have it use it, if not don't worry about it. Wear neutral collored clothing and pay attention to your movement. I worry more about covering my hands than the rest of me. using hand calls you are going to have hand movement so I try to wear gloves. I have killed many of my coyotes over the years wearing blue jeans and a carhart jacket.

As readily available as it is today, Id jump on the band wagon and buy some. If you find yourself driving by a good spot and only have khaki colored clothes on, dont let it stop you.

Camo has really moved forward, with product lines such as Realtree HD, camo is looking more like a tree on a shirt then your average camoflauge. Its like anything though, the more you pay the more you look like a tree. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
