Can anyone dicpher this?

I just sent a picture of it to someone at the University of Washington. From a roster posted by the UW, it is even hard to try to find the right person to ask. Hopefully if I got the wrong person then he may know the right one. I'm guessing the bottom line on the end cap is the carvers name. Wonder what the rest of it is?

Those are letters.

The 3 is ZH in english.

The 4 is our english C.

I think what you have there is a russian sailors name that is from the village of SOUTH NUNYAMO, RUSSIA.

All the other words when searched go to russian sites that I cant read. I believe it IS someones name.

Edit.

Ok, heres some more.

NUNYAMO RUSSIA is right across the bering straight from Alaska.

It is a stones throw from it and is at the closet point that russia has to our continent.

They are neighbors.

Ok, I got this from a translator.

The first word is WORKED.

Followed by three places in Russia.

It appears they are villages, or were at that time frame.

KOSTYERYEZ.

CHUKOTKYE

S. NUNYAMO.

I think ya got a nice piece of history there.

Congrats.

Thanks Super White Hunter.

It was fun. I like stuff like this. I metal detect too and do this kind of research looking for colonial cellar holes.

I'm after the OLD rare coins!

That is all I got on this.

Guess the guy worked in those villages and thats that.

Too bad he didnt carve his name....

That's great detective work Black_Wolf. I still haven't heard back from the email to the University, but it sounds like you have solved the ciper. Thanks again.

No prob, Jumprightinit, glad to help.

Maybe the guy who carved it sent it to his family? Kind of like a letter?

The word ROBATAT means "To work, I work, etc" in russian.

ROBATAL can mean I'm Working there, I Worked there, or I'm going to be Working there...

Really no distinction between them translated to english.

Maybe he sent that to his family so they knew he was alive and his wherabouts?

Who knows?

Also wanted to say you might be careful who you show that to. If it is some kind of valuable piece you might get people coming out of the wood work saying that it belongs to their peoples or their tribes stuff and it is a long lost artifact and wanting it back!?

Has happened before and ya just never know?

Good luck and take care of it.

You might try your local library. Even if they can't help, maybe they can tell you who can. It really is a beautiful piece of work. There is no way I would ever let it out of my sight, people just aren't honest enough for me to be comfortable "sending" it any where!!! I hope you keep it in your family forever. You don't just happen up on things like that everyday. Good Luck,Ben Jimmy

I agree... I have one that I picked up at an antique auction (fortunately cheap) with some beautiful ink work only to find out that it's an acrylic reproduction...

To the untrained eye, it looks very real and old, but under a microscope you can see the distinct difference when compared to a real one..and with the computerized laser cutters out now, duplicating the artwork is not a big problem..

Even "Reputable" businesses are not that secure...We went to Egypt in '96 and bought some really fine gold jewelery (22k) and my wife had to have a pendant repaired a few years later...mysteriously, the chain and claim ticket disappeared out of the jeweler's safe while the item was in for repair...they wanted to replace the chain with a 14k one and expected us to be happy...
