Can I convert a 77/22mag to a 77/17HMR?

I have a Ruger 77/22 KMBZ in 22 magnum that is becoming a safe queen now that I am busting groundhogs with my newer varmint rifles. This 22 Mag has been decent out to 125 yards and I'm hoping I can convert to 17 HMR and pop crows out to 200 yards. Is this feasible both with this rifle and cartridge? Any idea of a cost to convert it to 17 HMR?

a barrel change is all you have to do. if you have a newer model 77/22 you will need a gunsmith to do the work. if you have a older model, i believe 2008 or older, you can change the barrel in 5 min. or less. in 2009 Ruger started threading the receivers on their 77/22's.

Yup, what Larr said. Got one with both bbl's that I never use too! Nice guns, and that 22 mag bbl. of mine esp. shoots really well with those Rem Premiers! Didn't know about the bbl's being threaded [beeep] - that's why I come here - to learn!! LOL!!!

I have a newer one with a threaded barrel. Guess I need to call Ruger and inquire about price for a barrel?

Mike B - how did your HMR barrel shoot? Is the 17 HMR good for 200 yard crow work?

Well son of a gun, I learned sumtin ! Did not know Ruger was screwin barrels on now.

200 yards is tuff in the wind. I've killed chucks/pdogs at 150 ish.

Love my HMRs.

WW: Never shot it at 200, nor have I really shot it much at all. The 17 bl. shot ok, but I didn't try all ammo
s either. I know any model gun can vary from one to the next. It was the 22 mag on this one that shot lights out, but really with the Rem Premiers. I think custom bbl's will help that along nicely. That's where the home interchangability of the Rugers' bbl's is sweet.

Absoloutely, My record with my 17HMR so far is a ground squirrel at 275 yards, on video tape. I will make 300 I know for a fact I will.

Thanks. I know it makes no difference but cabelas wanted the muzzle break on it and I like the look. the 10 1/2 pounds it weighs helps to reduce recoil as well, LMAO.

There are a lot of aftermarket barrels for 77/22 77/17 I have seen take off barrels a few times, I have a Butler Creek and it shoots good. not a difficult swap

I have a old model 77/22 would like to convert to 17hmr is this possible? this is a 22lr.what would work in this action other than 22 long rifle.

You need MAG action to build a HMR. With the 22 long rifle action you can build a 17M2.

i thought the same thing but every rimfire guru i questioned said they were the same, the only difference were the magazine, trigger guard and of course the barrel. i have compared both of my 77/22lr and 77/17mag and cannot find any differences in the receivers. can you point me to where you found they are different? I'm not doubting you but i really would like to know what the differences are.
