Can I use Large Rifle Magnum primers?

I am new to reloading and was talking to a guy that told me that if I didn't already have particular loads worked up I could use magnum large rifle primers for cartridges like 220 swift, 25-06, 308 etc., without causing a problem but that I should start the loads low and work up to maximum. He told me that if I had already worked up certain loads to the max and then swithched to magnum primers that would be a problem. I can't find any large rifle primers so I would like to know if I can take his advice and use the magnum primers which are the only primers I could find.

I use magnum primers in my 25-06, 243, and 30-06 with no problems. I would take your loads (if they are max loads or close) and reduce them by 10-15% and work them up. I am no expert, but this is what works for me.

WOW..the primer availablity has eased somewhat in my area, too bad for Nevada..lots of mail order places are offering just about everything... back to you questions..I've used nothing but magnum primers in everything I shoot from 22/250 to .338 without any problem whatsoever...I bought about 10'000 Remington 9 1/2's many moons ago and since they are mainly hunting rifles I don't shoot all that many shots per year and still have never had a single pressure issue and case life is still the same.. never had a mis-fire or hang-fire in any caliber at temperatures as low as minus -20 degrees and as high as near 100...so go ahead and use them..

I only use them in very cold weather, but my buddy uses nothing but mag primer with no problem. Just work them up like all loads.

Thanks for the advice guys. I feel alot better about using the magnum primers and trust my informant better now. It's always good to have a few different opinions, especially when you as new to reloading as I am.
