Can we cover MOA in detail

The post about the 1000 yard prairie dog got me thinking.

On the picture in the post at 1062 yards the 1 MOA looks to be a foot (1') plus. Can someone explain this. I've read about MOA and long range shooting (actually I have a Leupold MR/T M2 scope) but really don't completely know how to use it yet....sound dumb I know but I got a great deal on it.

Thanks in advance

MOA is easy

1 MOA is 1" at 100 yards
2 MOA is 2" at 200 yards
3 MOA is 3" at 300 yards
4 MOA is 4" at 400 yards
5 MOA is 5" at 500 yards

and so on. Add on 1" to the MOA for every 100 yards.

Actually, MOA is 1.04 Inch at 100 yards so MOA at 1000 yards would be 10.4 inches and MOA at 1062 yards would be 11.04 inches.

That's probably a hair that didn't need splitting!

Well, no doubt someone else would have split it anyway... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Also, it's the "correct" MOA statement.....

The best way to think of it is as a linear angular measurement, just like inch per hundred yds. or inch of angle (IOA) that's occasionally used. 1 IOA= 1" at 100 yds. 2" @ 200 yds., and 2.63" @ 263 yds., etc. Figure that Leupold Tactical scope out-- it's a GREAT long-range system.

5 MOA is 5" at 500 yards

That is incorrect

1 MOA @ 500 yards is five inches.
5 MOA @ 500 yards is 25 inches.

MOA, minute of angle, a unit of angular measurement equal to 1/60th of one degree, acyually equals 1.047 inches per 100 yards of range to target. 1 moa at 1000 yrds is 10.47 inches.

1 moa= 1"@100yds
2 moa= 4"@200yds
3 moa= 9"@300yds
4 moa= 16"@400yds
5 moa= 25"@500yds

Im sure Holly has seen his folly, these tables get confusing if you don't pay attention:)

That's correct. Glad to see someone split it finer than I did! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It looked right to me the first time I read JHolly's post, but the more I thought about it, it didnt seem to add up so I felt the need to add a correction.

No hard feelings JHolly, just trying to clear things up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Holly...........folly..........Oh, I get it! hehe /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif (sorry, I'm a little slow tonight)

jedicazador,
It depends on your particular scope. The most common is 1/4 MOA clicks, although 1/3 MOA and 1/8 MOA are fairly common. Many scopes do not have clicks, just lines to turn to, usually 1 MOA apart.
