I managed to retire at 38. I then did everything I had ever wanted to do. Get a Degree, backpack all over, canoe, hunt and fish all I wanted. In 95, I lucked into another job and now I'm eligable to retire again. Also have my investments. I'm happy. Good luck with your plans.

I have the same problem. My 2009 goal is to reverse the trend of the past 20 years, working for peanuts, at jobs that arent worth doing.

So you are not alone.

I make enough peanuts to get by. Unfortunately the several different career choices I would find more enjoyable pay less. Much less.

Join the Military using their enlistment bonuses Programs, work your butts of for a few years, and then keep going for 20, or be discharged with VA Medical Care and Meds the rest of your lives, and 100% VA Home Loans. Often, you guys could select an MOS which would have a directly related Civilian job counterpart!

GOTO www.FreedomTeamSalute.com You'll be glad you did!

Also, old Geezers like me can sign you up and earn a $2,000 bonus, half paid @ your Graduation from Basic, half @ your Graduation from AIT/OSUT. IF you both sign up in the Buddy Program you can almost always serve on the same base or close by. I will meet you at your Graduations and hand you the Bonus money less taxes I would have to pay.

Think about it!

There are about 212 Military Occupational Specialities not all of which involve putting lead down range. Be sure if you talk to a RECRUITER to tell them I brought you two in so I can get that Bonus to pass on in part to you.

broknearo,

Look into permanent life insurance. Specifically, Indexed Universal Life. You protect your family and leave an instant estate behind if you die young, and if you live to retirement age, your money grows tax-free and you can borrow it back out on a monthly basis TAX FREE AND WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY IT BACK. Like a Roth IRA on steroids. Aviva markets a pretty good product, check it out.

Thanks for the advice Deputysam. I've done my 8 and I'm out. Did 1 tour in Afghanistan and 1 in Iraq. 26th MEU. Hence my signature. I'm here now trying to scratch a living out of the Civilian World.
