Can't decide....Ruger vs. Remington in .243

Wife said I could buy a new rifle.

I want stainless / synthetic. I have handled both the Remington 700 SPS and the Ruger synthetic stainless. Both seemed to fit and feel the same. Both pretty close to same price.

What do you guys think?

Pros and cons of each?

I have a 700BDL in .270 and a Model 7 in 7mm-08. Happy with both of those Remmys. Maybe try something new though.

Opinions please....

I have two Ruger ss/syn a 22-250, and 7mag. Both shoot great, But the thing that really has me sold is the lack of rust. I have hunted all day in snow and rain and not wiped down or cleaned either rifle many times. Not one spec of rust. I have seen a ss Rem rust after being exposed to bad weather for only a few hours.

Don't mess with it if it ain't broke. Maybe a little tinkering but, not with a R***R ( *edited for language* )

i would go with the rem 700.just because you can put a good after market trigger on it.i use the jewells on mine.butt there are a bunch of good triggers out there for them.

I own 3 Remingtons and 2 Rugers...
I stick with the Remingtons for centerfire.
I stick with the Rugers for rimfire.

If I were in your shoes, I'd go with a Remington simply because you're used to the feel of the triggers and the placement of the safety. Never can tell when one little fumble will cost you your shot.....

Whichever you end up with, you'll be happy!

hello, i make no claim to "expertise" either way the remmy is always more friendly for modifications..always parts available ect..."but" for a solid hunting rifle i think a ruger is good-maybe great...considering a built in base & scope rings come with one it is certainly attractive...i would have no jitters on a ruger...its kind of like the "ole" days chevy always had the best ride & looks in my opinion...yet a dodge got things done...just with a few less fluff's...i currently do not have a ruger, however there are a few i wished i had back !! & i will pick up another or two somewhere along the line....

I own a Ruger All-Weather in 223 I use for a calling rifle, and I love it. Shoots great, and feels great to me. I really like the 3 position safety, so that I can unload/work the bolt with the safety on. Also, I like to be able to dump all the shells easily with the opening plate on the magazine.(Maybe the SPS has that feature, but my calling partners 700ADL has a blind box magazine, and he has to cycle the bolt to remove every round.) That kinda sucks when you have to unload the gun each time you get in the truck and drive on the road.

I own several of both, they are all well made, good shooting rifles. All but 1 of my Rugers is an early model tang safety. I prefer the Rems really for 2 little reasons, after market trigger availability, and the other is I just really do not like that D@*^! 3 position Ruger safety.

Kayak: FYI.....

You might still find an unsold one on a gun counter somewhere, but Remington quit making rifles with the "silly a$$ lawyer J-Lock" about a year ago. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

More aftermarket stuff around for the Remington, The Ruger looks better, (IMHO). I've owned both and the Remington out shot the Ruger by a wide margin so I stuck with the Remington.

I have a few Rugers and I love them. I also have to agree with BobT, "The Ruger looks better"! The factory trigger is junk on the Rugers though. It can be worked easily or just changed out.

Although being a Ruger guy for years, I would take Falfires advice and take a hard look at Tikka! Can't beat the accuracy, especially for factory and the trigger is great. The trigger is easily adjustable in just a few minutes. It may be slightly more, but the value is well worth it!

The Remington and never look back. First, the Rem's can be smithed by just about anyone for custom rifle purposes. Second, the Rem should out shoot the Ruger out of the box. Third, tremondous amount of accessories for the Rem's.

I'm not a big fan of Ruger for two reasons:

1. They don't shoot well out of the box.
2. The SS models are way too heavy.

I had a M-77 in 25-06 with a semi bull barrel and that thing could double as a boat anchor!

It shot around MOA with factory ammo, may have done better if I rolled my own, but over all that goofy skeleton stock and the weight drove me to sell it.

I own 3 Remington's now. An ADL 30-06, a VSSF II in 204, and the new XCR in 300 Win Mag. All SS except the ADL-all are shooters.

MHWASH mentioned the Remington's rusting. I've had all of my guns in the snow, rain, and humidity and never noticed rust forming within hours. My ADL, which is blued did get some rust once but that was my fault-forgot to oil it up for the ride home from Utah in 2004. 2004 was a big snow year in Utah-it was coming up from the ground!

I'm not totally anti Ruger though. I love they're wheel guns and shotguns!

In my opinion buy a savage. They are the best factory rifle you can buy. They might not look as pretty as the others, but they will outshoot all of them.I have owned sevral of them and they all shot under MOA.I had a Savage 12bvss in 220 swift and it shot .5 MOA with factory ammo.the accutrigger is the best factory trigger out there and if you want to switch later timney, jewell, and SSS all make compitition triggers for them.I have never had a stainless Savage rust.If you decide you dont like whatever caliber you buy you can rebarrel unbelieveably easy.I have a guns and ammo magazine where they tested the ruger remington, and savage in 204 ruger. The savage outshot them all.The ruger shot the worst. If you want more info on savage go to savageshooters.net

I have a Ruger in .223 kVT model (dynomite shooter) except for the trigger. My fix was simple got a vintage Sako vixen. Now no more trigger problems. If after market parts is your concern, fret no more rifle basix makes good triggers too. They both do a fine job.

+1 On the Savage, great shooters right out of the box. I was looking at a Ruger at the Ma & Pop local guntstore which cost about $100 more than the Savage,he told me right there, I would be wasting that $100 bill.

I'am sure glad he said that, the Savage 22-250 is a shooter for sure.
