carbon arrow performance

took a couple of crappy shots at elk this season and hit trees. the first inch or so of the arrow was crushed around the insert. the insert was still glued to the carbon. on one, the broadhead was broken off at the threads. the broadheads were buried in the wood. it is a new bow to me and i have never had this problem before, but i also havent shot a tree in years. this new bow chronographs at about 300 fps with a 365 or so grain arrow.

i need to buy some new arrows, but am not sure what i want to get. the arrows i am using are radial x weave 200's, they fly nice and seem to group well, but i wonder what will happen if the arrow hits bone.
i have run cheapo cabelas carbon arrows, but they dont seem nearly as accurate and do not fly as well. i have a hard time seeing spending $10 or $12 dollars per arrow. so i am watching ebay.

I'm shooting the Gold Tip Hunter XT's 55-75. Shoot great and very tough. My brothers all use the carbon express arrows and they seem equally durable. Although much more money.

A $10-12 arrow will last a looooong time if you keep'em out of the trees and don't loose them.

Tim Hit the nail on the head. Spend the money. Easton Axis,Carbon Express, and Gold Tip are the top 3 IMHO. Im a huge God Tip fan, but iv killed alot of stuff with Easton FMJ arrows. They are as tuff as they get.

For Elk I like Carbon Express Maxima with Blazer vanes. Good FOC of 10.2%. (hard hitting)

With time and test and proven Muzzy MX-3.

It's a hard choice, there are good arrows out there Gold Tip, Beman ect.

the one i picked up were 6070 wolverine 31" 11.2 grams/inch which is a 340 plus 100gr points= 440

I was useing the carbon express mayhem hunter 350's but I got the maxima's this year and I love them so far...very strong arrow and pretty accurate too...also a bit faster than the mayhems.

with my old bow, i only destroyed an arrow if i hit a rock. but with the new bow, the arrows just arent holding up.

i switched to carbons back in the mid 90's to have arrows last longer. the aluminum arrows just didnt hold up. it does make sense that more expensive arrows are in the long run cheaper if they dont blow up if they hit a tree.
i just need to figure out which ones.
i run a 28" draw at 70# with 125gr broadheads. i thought about switching to 150gr with the power the new bow has. i just really like a flat shooting arrow.

100 gr head and an Easton Axis 340 will kill stuff.

+1 on the Easton Axis 340s

Two years ago I was hunting the late archery season in WI. The temp was around -20 and a poplar tree jumped in front of my arrow when I had a shot at a nice buck. I unscewed the arrow and left the broad head in the tree and I!m still using the arrow.

I favor the 15% to 20% range of foc

Seems strange the arrow got creamed by a tree.I have used those PSE radial weave arrows and only busted them if I hit a rock while stump shooting.Maybe they were cut wrong/not square.Did you use hot melt glue or epoxy on the inserts?

hot melt glue. i used to use glue that i bought specifically for inserts, but after a few hard hits, the inserts would spin.

i have run the radial x weave arrows since 2007 season. never had a problem with my old bow that chronographed at about 285 to 290 fps. with the new bow i have, every arrow that has hit a tree (3) has been destroyed. the first inch or so of arrow is pulverized, there is not splintering farther back. the insert still has carbon glued to it, but the insert has been shoved back into the shaft. the arrows could be cut off and reused if they were long enough.

We've been using Goat tuff "Impact". It has some flex additive so when it "impacts" a hard object the bond can flex a little and not break lose.
Too much heat can degrade the carbon surrounding the insert.

i thought about the heat, but it was just hot enough to get the glue to melt.

just bought a dozen carbon express mayhem 350's on ebay for $75. 5/8" longer than i normally shoot but i can deal with that.

did some looking on the x-weaves, the chart says i should be using 300's, but i have been using 200's. wonder if that makes a difference.

Easton Axis, cant say enough about the quality of easton carbon fiber. I have a lot of experience with their carbon line in bike parts, and i never had to warranty any of it. easton does a great job with carbon fiber lay up.

I shot a buck just a week ago with axis and it was a total pass through with easton axis 400. buy right the first time.
