Carbon Fouling Question

I started using a lyman borescope and took pictures of my 6 creedmoor with about 400 rounds on the barrel. I've cleaned it about every 100 rounds with wipeout tactical advantage, carb-out, and a nylon brush. I've never used a borescope before. Does it need to be cleaned more? Fire cracking is based on heat. If you're trying to slow that down, increase idle time between your shots. A 6 Creedmoor is a hot round and you'll need a barrel sooner than a 6.5. I would expect a barrel replacement b/t 1,200-2,000 rounds.

YOWSER..!!

At 400 rounds, this one has been rode hard and put away wet a few times. Muchos heat cracking for 400 rounds down the tube.

Having looked at many different throats at varying degrees off rounds fired through them, most would be surprised at just how quickly fire cracking shows up. I've seen lots of my own with only 100-200 rounds though them that showed all kinds of fire cracking.

The first time I saw one of my own barrels that showed fire cracking and didn't have very many rounds through it I experienced one of those [beeep] moments and made a trip out to my gunsmiths. He scoped it with his Hawkeye borescope and said it was pretty normal looking then went on to explain how quickly fire cracking happens and unless the throat had moved a lot or the accuracy had fallen off not to be overly concerned about it.

No I haven't been shooting steel and I thought I was letting the barrel cool enough between shots. I'll try to find an accurate load that isn't as hot

I picked up a used RPR in 6 creed for a great price with 500 rounds down the tube (allegedly). I don't have a borescope but there is significant cracking, at least as bad if not worse than what is above. After selecting a powder charge, and the 115 coated DTAC, I started testing seating depths in .003" increments. Out of 10 test groups, only one was over 1MOA, barely. The majority were between .4 and .6 and 3 were between .25 and .3.

Maybe I need to send off my bore scope and get its eyes adjusted....?

As an example that some here might be be able to relate to, I have a Ruger Model 77 220 Swift that has just short of 1K rounds through it that has far less fire cracking than the OP's barrel does. Other similar examples exist also in my gun safes.

Powder choice can have a significant impact on barrel wear due to heat just like over firing and heating a barrel can. Some of today's magical new powders come with an extra price tag attached.
